Overview

Assists in managing the day-to-day operations of the Operating Room utilizing quality, cost effective patient care principles. Provides support and direction to the Operating Room team. Supervises, supports, and develops unit staff. As a member of the Surgical Services team assists in providing perioperative nursing care to the surgical patient in the operating room. Consistently utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical, psych/social, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area).

Responsibilities

Management

  • Integrates the UnityPoint Health Des Moines Nursing Expectations of Performance in all aspects of care delivery and professional practice.

  • Manages daily operations of patient care. Contributes to the maintenance of high-quality, cost-effective services consistent with the needs of the users and the hospital's budgetary guidelines.

  • Provides clinical leadership by directing, coordinating, and delegating patient care in an organized manner, allowing for flexibility.

  • Acts as an interdepartmental liaison promoting effective multidisciplinary teamwork and positive interpersonal relations.

  • Collaborates with physicians and other health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

  • Remains competent and available to participate in patient care pertinent to clinical specialty.

  • Demonstrates personal and professional growth and promotes the same among team members.

  • Exhibits discretion and sound judgment in all aspects of the job.

  • Maintains awareness of applicable laws and/or regulations affecting patient care. Remains current on law/regulation changes, recognizes implications to the organization and recommends courses of action to ensure compliance.

  • Assists in the development of policy/procedure and guidelines for safe, efficient operation of the department as needed.

  • Assists in developing annual budget and takes appropriate action when appropriate to maintain control of department financial resources.

  • Implements evidence-based practice strategies to meet the patient care needs. Assists in the achievement of quality improvement objectives and takes necessary modifications for attainment of goals.

  • Participates in interviews, coaching and evaluation of team member performance with appropriate input. Demonstrates the ability to interpret, apply and follow HR policies/procedures fairly and consistently.

  • Represents UPHDM in a professional manner. Promotes positive interpersonal relations and serves as a role model within the department and with hospital personnel.

  • Creates an environment that promotes staff empowerment.

  • Displays creativity and innovation when making recommendations for improvement in the delivery of services to the hospital.

  • Can instruct and lead the staff so that a high level of productivity is maintained, intervening when necessary to problem solve.

  • Demonstrates the ability to be fair and impartial while maintaining a professional relationship.

  • Consistently utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical, psych/social, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area).

  • Participates in interdepartmental projects for personal and professional development.

  • Provides honest, timely and consistent communication while collaborating with staff, physicians & peers.

  • Publishes a timely, fair, consistent, and impartial staffing schedule that meets the department need.

  • Supervises, supports, evaluates, and guides staff providing appropriate input for job performance.

  • Set agendas and run meetings.

  • Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Preferred or Specialized

Not required to perform the essential functions of the position.

Education:

Bachelor's degree.

Graduate of accredited nursing program.

Successful completion of all modules of the Supervisor Orientation Program (New Leader U or equivalent) within the first year of accepting the position.

Experience:

One year experience as a registered nurse.

OR Experience

Three years of operating room nursing, and/or charge nurse or leadership experience.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.

Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire.

Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

CNOR certification

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.

Multicultural sensitivity.

Microsoft Office - basic computer skills.

Customer/patient focused.

Critical thinking skills using independent judgement in making decisions.

Intermediate computer skills
