Clinical Nurse Supervisor - Adult Acute Services

Broughton Hospital is currently accepting applications for a Nurse Manager position.  The Nurse Manager provide 24-hour leadership and guidance to Nursing Staff and Nursing Supervisors in goal setting, problem solving, resource and outcome management to ensure the needs of the patients are met with existing resources.  This is achieved through the organization, administration, coordination and supervision of nursing service practices within the hospital.  The Nurse Manager involves a multitude of direct and indirect patient care tasks.  Attention is directed to the emotional and physical needs of the acutely ill psychiatric patient, while also safeguarding his/her human rights.  Also, attention is directed to the morale and well-being of the caregiver who is critical to the continuous delivery of adequate patient care.  The Nurse Manager works collaboratively to provide leadership for assigned areas of supervision and overall management of nursing services for the hospital.  The nurse manager reports to nursing administration and collaborates with other disciplines/departments to ensure that patient care needs are met using professional, evidence-based standards and regulatory agency standards.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Ensures quality in the delivery of nursing care by regularly monitoring, analyzing, and evaluating data from audits, unit rounds, employee and patient incident reports, medication variance reports, and complaints and inquiries from patients and families.

  • Facilitates and/or participates in Performance Improvement Teams to improve patient outcomes for nursing services.

  • Provides expertise and mentoring for staff relating to investigations, while ensuring all aspects of investigations are completed accurately and timely per policies and procedures, working collaboratively with other departments appropriately.

  • Role models and encourages problem-solving for assigned area(s) or supervision; developing mechanisms for problem identification and encourage staff to develop proposed solutions; supporting staff in implementation of solutions.

  • Monitors effectiveness of interventions initially and on a continuing basis.

  • Evaluates Nursing staff's contributions to programming efforts in relation to total needs of service area and availability of staff.

  • Spontaneous interactions and interventions with patients as role modeling clinical skills.

  • Routinely carries out functions within the Patient Safety Evaluation System (PSES) which may include, but is not limited to review and analysis of events, maintaining patient safety work product (PSWP) within a secure environment, and providing patient safety event information designated as patient safety event to designated quality and risk management personnel for the Patient Safety Organization (PSO).

  • Actively participates as a member of Nursing Executive Council to establish goals to provide quality nursing services.

  • Reviews and revises master staffing plans relating to House Supervisory coverage, providing efficient, cost effective use of nursing personnel with an understanding of patient care needs, projected patient census and changes in psychiatric practice.

  • Assesses and determines budgeted requests that influence the provision of a safe therapeutic environment by assuring that there are adequate patient care supplies and equipment available to nursing staff.

  • Reviews nursing department vacancy reports, and any other fiscal reports available.

  • Manages contract nursing staff utilization within vacant positions and overtime utilization per Hospital Leadership.

  • Manages all aspects of personnel matters in accordance with State Personnel Policies and Hospital policies.

  • Provides structure and leadership conducive to open communication among all levels of nursing staff, as well as with other disciplines and departments, utilizing information received from sources within the organization (hospital, and community contacts, through attendance at meetings such as Nursing Administration, Clinical consultations, etc.).

  •  Develops and maintains multiple communication strategies to keep employees informed of pertinent information (meetings, communication book, written memos and other documents, minutes, bulletin boards, rounds, meetings with supervisors).

Qualified candidates must document on the application that they clearly possess the following:

  • Experience coaching and developing staff

  • Experience scheduling staff to meet patient care, unit, and service area needs

  • Experience managing staff levels to ensure staffing is adequate.

  • Experience conducting management investigations (i.e. interviews)

  • Experience communicating (oral, written) complex patient/staff needs to supervisory chain of command

  • Experience drafting and administering coaching letters and disciplinary actions

  • Experience conducting interviews to fill vacant positions

Management prefers candidates with the following:

  • Four years of nursing supervision/management experience.

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina and four years of nursing experience, including two years of experience in a Nurse Supervisor capacity.

Degrees must be from appropriately accredited colleges or universities.

Broughton Hospital operates 382 beds and is one of the three regional psychiatric hospitals with statutory responsibility for operating as part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF).  With the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, we provide help and support to North Carolinians, and their families, experiencing mental illness. Our hospital serves the western thirty-seven (37) counties of North Carolina, as part of the state's system of care and treatment for persons with mental illness.

Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus

Qualified applicants must be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:

  • A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time employee who works 30 to 40 hours per week is eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week).

An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:

  • The employee has held a position in North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date);

  • The employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency;

  • Or DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.
