SUMMARY
Within the context of Hennepin Healthcare's Patient and Family - Centered Care (PFCC) and Professional Practice Model, and under general direction of the Patient Care Director or Senior Director, the Nurse Manager performs work of considerable difficulty in planning, organizing, coordinating, evaluating and directing nursing service activities.
The Nurse Manager provides leadership, implements the vision, mission, core values, evidence based practice, and standards of the organization, and nursing within their defined areas of responsibility.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Recruits, hires, and evaluates nursing unit staff
Exhibits leadership behaviors that support staff to take responsibility, authority, and accountability for decision making related to patient care
Develops, maintains and evaluates systems and processes to facilitate the delivery of patient care
Assures adequate staffing consistent with patient acuity and assessment of staffing efficiencies
Monitors and ensures unit staff understands and complies with organizational standards, competency requirements, policies, procedures, and regulations
Establishes and monitors unit based expense, revenue and volume statistics. Achieves financial targets through effective use of resources and adheres to productivity standards
Understands and implements provisions of applicable labor contracts
Supports lifelong learning for staff by coaching and encouraging involvement in educational and developmental opportunities
Is accountable for supporting and strengthening the professional practice environment
Bases decisions and actions on ethical principles
Collaborates with nursing staff at all levels, physicians, interdisciplinary teams, executive leaders and other stakeholders to achieve outcomes
Creates a caring culture that fosters positive, effective nurse- patient -family relationships
Supports and develops organizational and unit based strategies to create, sustain, and nurture patient and family - centered care (PFCC)
Creates an environment that encourages engagement, creativity, and inclusion for employees
Establishes an environment that supports the professional nurse in planning, coordinating and evaluating patient care
Provides leadership for work redesign and continuous process improvement and coaches all staff to participate in the process
Applies LEAN principles to drive waste and variation out of healthcare processes and develops successful implementation of standard work practices
Designs and implements sustainability plans for improvement work / projects
Maintains commitment to Hennepin Healthcare's Mission, Vision and Values; and assures these are practiced and advanced on the patient care unit
Supports research and evidence based practice and its integrations into nursing and the delivery of healthcare services
Develops, maintains, and evaluates information systems and processes that promote desired patient, professional and organizational goals
Authors unit goals and strategies based upon the annual plan. Measures and monitors activities to assure attainment of established outcomes and innovation
Maintains and demonstrates current knowledge in the administration of health care organizations to advance nursing practice and the provision of quality health care services
Systematically evaluates the quality, safety and effectiveness of nursing practice, and patient care outcomes
Develops, maintains and evaluates unit based patient and staff data collection systems and processes to support the practice of nursing and delivery of high quality care
Provides a healing environment to patients, visitors, staff and providers through maintenance of an organized and clean patient care unit
Evaluates personal performance based on professional practice standards, relevant statues, policies, organizational criteria, and outcomes achievement
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in nursing or related field. If the Master's degree is in a related field, the individual must have a Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited program
Individuals who do not have a Master's degree in either nursing or a related field must have a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and be actively enrolled in an approved Master's or Doctorate nursing or related field program. The Master's or Doctorate degree must be obtained within 5 years of hire as a condition of continued employment
Two (2) years of Operating Room experience
Three to five (3 to 5) years of professional leadership experience (i.e., charge nurse, team leader, preceptor, committee chair, etc.)
Five (5) years clinical experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Recent acute care/hospital experience
Nursing management experience
Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:
Ability to effectively manage hospital resources (i.e., budget and staff)
Ability to motivate employees and inspire positive change within department
Innovative thinker; Ability to contribute new ideas that support organizational goals
Skilled in managerial duties (i.e., hiring, firing, performance appraisals, pay reviews)
Skilled in modeling company values through daily interactions within the department and organization
High standard of ethics, discipline, and professionalism
Skilled in fostering a positive workplace culture and building inclusive workplace teams
