Position Description

Position: Nurse Manager

Status: Exempt

Immediate Supervisor: Associate Director of Nursing

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Triage Nurse

Under general supervision of the Associate Director of Nursing, the Associate Medical Director and Medical Director, the Nurse Manager is responsible for overseeing and supporting the dynamic day-to-day clinical and operational aspects of the nursing department by providing guidance and mentorship to staff. Key duties include:

Duties:
1.Works collaboratively with the Associate Director of Nursing, Associate Director of Clinical Operations and Associate Medical Director/Medical Director to continuously improve the day-to-day management of clinical and patient related services. Ensures smooth patient flow and daily clinical operations of the site.
2.Both provides effective triage and floor training to new nurses and ensures all staff have ongoing clinical support and in-services in order to stay up to date in their field.
3.Responsible for coordinating monthly clinical schedules for the RNs to ensure appropriate Provider/Nurse/Medical Assistant ratios and coverage with the support from Associate Director of Nursing as needed.
4.Responsible for weekly schedule edits in response to any last minute changes including changes in staffing ratios and sick calls. Responsible for communicating need of coverage between other staff nurses or picking up shifts in conjunction with Waltham Nurse Manager when other staff is not available in order to ensure appropriate clinical coverage.
5.Functions as a Triage Nurse in the Health Center for 50-60% of the time, and performs management and administrative duties for the balance of the time.
6.Performs yearly evaluations to ensure continued staff development, works on performance improvement plans and other personnel matters as needed.
7.Oversees and manages inventory and purchasing of medical supplies for the essential functioning of the practice. Supports the maintenance and functioning of the medical equipment to ensure a safe patient and staff environment. Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations and laws.
8.In collaboration with Associate Director of Nursing, works on recruitment and retention of staff.
9.Coordinates preceptorship for nursing students from area colleges and universities
10. Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science Degree in nursing; Masters preferred.

  • Licensed in Massachusetts as a Registered Nurse with 3+ years experience in nursing with recent clinical experience in outpatient medical setting.

  • Bilingual/bicultural preferred.

  • Good communication skills, particularly with staff and patients from diverse cultures whose primary language is not English.

  • Experience with Patient Centered Medical Home model and concepts preferred.

  • Knowledge of and experience with EMR systems required.

VIEW JOBS 9/12/2018 12:00:00 AM 2018-12-11T00:00 Nurse Manager, Labor & Delivery/Mother Baby POSITION SUMMARY: * The L&D M/B Nurse Manager is a management/leadership position in MCH Department and operationalizes the core values of the Organization by promoting patient and family centered care. * The Nurse Manager has responsibility/accountability for the unit's operations and initiates ongoing evaluation. * Patient care outcomes are the result of interdisciplinary collaboration coordinated by the Nurse Manager. * The Nurse Manager who works collaboratively with the Director of Maternal Child Health in planning and implementing patient care at the service/department level * This position is responsible for providing supervision, clinical expertise, mentoring, and role modeling to members of the nursing team while optimizing available resources to achieve optimal patient care outcomes. * This role may include, but is not limited to, supervision and appraisal of staff performance, evaluation of patient care interventions and outcomes, coordination of workflow activities, competency development and validation of neonatal related skill requirements, participation in unit-based and hospital committees and organization of quality/performance improvement activities. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: * The Nurse Manager has twenty four hour responsibility/accountability for the units' operations. Patient care outcomes are the result of interdisciplinary collaboration coordinated by the Director of Maternal Child Health. * Uses advanced knowledge and understanding for specialty service in collaboration with the Director of Maternal Child Health and the Clinical Nurse Educator in strategic planning for the operational needs of the unit. * The Nurse Manager is accountable for cost effective decision making regarding daily assignment of staff, use of supplies, capital expenditures, and par supply levels. * The Nurse Manager is responsible for day to day operational decision making. * Acts as an expert clinical resource to the nursing staff in the varying aspects of patient care by incorporating the following elements: critical thinking skills, evidence-based and best practice modalities in patient care and the integration of current standard of care. * Supervises and evaluates the care provided to patients within service specialty through audit processes and observation. * Conducts annual performance evaluations. * Monitors and analyzes trends involving census, staff resources and changes in patient acuity and recommends budgets changes (manpower and non-wage). * Based on analysis, develops variance reports, corrective action plans and data needed to project for future budgetary needs. * Develops business plans for new clinical programs. * Serves on committees, task forces, and work groups on a voluntary and appointed basis at the department and Medical Center-wide levels, participating actively and completing follow-up activities in a consistent manner. * Conducts daily rounds on unit and communicates findings with doctors and staff. * Participates in JCAHO and regulatory agencies' accreditation processes and addresses safety and legal requirements established with emphasis on those pertinent to the Division of Maternal Child Health. * Promotes collaborative relationships between the nursing staff members of labor and delivery and the mother baby unit. * Promotes a model of shared governance. * Develops a rapport with all other department managers, administrative personnel and physician's to promote the concept of a team approach to the Medical Center's goals. * Collaborates with the other Steward Healthcare Members belonging to Maternal Child Health * Demonstrates an overall accountability to recruit, interview, select and evaluate department personnel. * Promotes a supportive working environment within the Medical Center. * Utilizes procedures as defined by the Nursing Division, Human Resources, and related departments to provide counseling, disciplinary action plans and/or termination as necessary. * Creates a climate which assists staff in identifying individual strengths and areas of learning. * Demonstrates awareness of self-learning needs and seeks ways to meet these in order to maintain current competency and respond to new clinical and management demands. * Promotes a climate of clinical and professional excellence. * Perform all other duties as requested.
