The Manager is accountable for the overall quality of service provided by the department and for the supervision of the department's team members. The Manager ensures adequate staffing levels, appropriately trained staff and the most efficient use of resources. The Manager will delegate to other team members.

CLINICAL PRACTICE AND EDUCATION:

Research current trends in professional practices and evidence based medicine in conjunction with the clinical education department. Supervise and maintain Policy and Procedures to assure they are developed and maintained on Evidence Based Practice.

Oversee the development and maintenance of Nursing Standards of Care. Identifies employees' educational needs and provides or arranges to meet those needs, including overseeing the orientation period in conjunction with the clinical education department. Works collaboratively with compliance, risk and legal colleagues to ensure safe patient care is upheld.

DEPARTMENT LEADERSHIP:

Upholds professionalism and is accountable for on-going department compliance with all regulatory bodies (JCAHO, DPH). Establishes and implements short-range and long-range goals and objectives, policies, standardized processes and operating procedures. Monitors and evaluates operational effectiveness in meeting department goals.

Is accountable to effect changes required for improved results. Facilitates teamwork among department staff and between departments. Integrates services of nursing department with rest of Connecticut Children's and other outside parties to create a seamless service for patients and their families. Fosters teamwork by providing an infrastructure for team participation and coaching team members on individual or group decision-making and other team dynamics.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT:

Designs, establishes and maintains a staffing plan that effectively accomplishes the department's goals and objectives. Participates in and provides oversight to the selection of employees for the department.

Provides appropriate development opportunities to ensure staff is competent and continually improving their performance. Communicates expectations, provides ongoing coaching/feedback, objectively assess employee performance and provides appropriate rewards and recognition. Oversee department retention initiatives. Makes recommendations to Nursing Director and Operational Directors for clinical staffing needs for the practice and departments based on volume changes, national benchmarks, and contributions to in-patient care.

FISCAL MANAGEMENT:

Provides input and oversight for the development of department/practice budgets as it relates to clinical needs. Assists in the monitoring of monthly budget variances as it relates to medical expenses.

Actively seeks opportunities to generate revenue, decrease expenses and develop new business initiatives. Acts as a clinical resource to Practice Managers for the purchase of clinical supplies and equipment for the practice.

CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT:

Holds self and team members accountable for quality outcomes and continuous quality improvement. Develops and implements policies and procedures that promote performance improvement activities. Participates in hospital wide committees, including Leadership Committee.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION:

Champion the needs and promote the services of the Medical Center to the Community through active participation and taking the lead in community events that benefit Connecticut Children's Medical Center.

PATIENT AND FAMILY CENTERED CARE:

Encourages nursing staff to develop partnership with patients and families to ensure the inclusion of patient/families in decision making, information sharing and collaboration in activities. Accountable to improving the patient experience and service recovery efforts.

SELF DEVELOPMENT: Establish and maintain self as a professional expert and resource to the organization, patients, families and the community. Participates in appropriate professional organizations and continuing education programs.

POPULATION-SPECIFIC: - Demonstrates knowledge of the differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families.

Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the Core Behaviors and Leadership Behaviors.

Manages nursing employees and other clinical staff as assigned in the practices and special programs.

Education/Experience:

  • Education Required: BSN required

  • Education Preferred: Related Master's degree preferred

  • Experience required: 2+ years' management/ leadership

  • Experience Preferred: 1+ years' experience in Pediatric experience preferred

License/Certifications:

  • Current State of Connecticut Registered Nurse licensure is required.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR in adult, child, and infant is required.
