Description
We are hiring nurses to join Carnival's fleet of North American brands, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruise Lines, Holland America Lines, Seabourn and P&O Australia.
Nurses primarily provide individualized outpatient, inpatient, and intensive care to guests and crew. They act as first responders, triaging emergency calls, assessing and treating on-scene, and transferring patients to the shipboard medical center for definitive care. Through specific patient group directives, nurses can practice autonomously under the authority of doctors, assessing patients and providing treatment and advice for particular conditions. In addition to first response duties, they work closely with the other medical practitioners caring for patients and attending daily walk-in clinics.
Nurses also perform various technical and non-clinical administrative tasks that support the medical center's efficient and safe operation under the Senior Nurse's direction and supervision. Additional duties include equipment checks, medication and clinical consumables inventory management, participation in drills, audits, inspections, and training of other crew members. Technical skills are learned and practiced on board, such as X-rays acquisition and performing a wide array of laboratory tests and other procedures.
All medical staff provides a high level of customer service, maintaining a professional, dignified, friendly, assertive, and polite manner at all times towards guests and fellow crewmembers and demonstrating performance consistent with the Vision, Mission, and Strategic Plan of the organization.
Successful candidates will be assigned to work four-month contracts onboard our fleet of cruise ships operating worldwide, with two-month intermissions.
Nurse positition key responsibilities
Patient Care Responsibilities
- Delivers safe, evidence-informed nursing care - without the need for ongoing clinical supervision, following current nursing guidelines.
- Performs diagnostic testing, such as laboratory tests, EKGs, and X-rays
- Effectively communicates sound clinical reasoning, within scope of practice, to patients, caregivers, and colleagues.
- Performs prompt and effective first response, triage, stabilization, and preparation for appropriate transfer.
- Responds to calls, attends clinics, and provides care to patients in a timely manner and in accordance with triage priorities.
- Demonstrates level-appropriate procedural skills.
- Operates medical equipment appropriately and safely, reports discrepancies and malfunctions to Senior/Lead Nurse.
- Ensures health records are accurate, concise, timely and complete.
- Demonstrates the ability to function as an effective member of the medical team by completing allocated tasks appropriately, performing an equitable portion of the workload and on-call schedules, and consistently promoting a harmonious working environment.
- Demonstrates competency in drug computations and medication dispensing and administration.
- Completes nursing assessments, risk assessments and care plans per Company policy.
Patient Experience
- Interacts and communicates with guests and crew in a professional and empathetic manner.
- Consistently demonstrates sensitivity to every patient's culture, age, gender identity, ability, and socioeconomic status.
- Adheres to Company's Procedures on Safeguarding children and vulnerable individuals. Reports any concerns to the Senior Doctor.
- Listens attentively, is respectful and considerate, and uses non-technical language when communicating with patients and caregivers.
- Adheres to Company Privacy policies for handling of personal and sensitive health information.
- Participates in regular reviews of patient feedback to continually improve patient satisfaction
- Promptly and effectively assists in the evaluation of patient complaints; participates productively in service recovery strategies.
- Maintains excellent customer focus in all interactions, ensuring that medical services are consistently perceived as being accessible at any time.
- When foreign language proficiency is needed for patient care, provides translation support.
Professional Responsibilities
- Notifies the Senior Nurse or Senior Doctor in a timely manner of any significant clinical cases, cases that may affect the operation of the ship, and cases with potential communicable disease risks.
- Routinely demonstrates appropriate time management and organizational skills.
- Recognizes limits of own abilities and knowledge, asks for help, and escalates as needed.
- Seeks, and readily accepts feedback.
- Changes practice and behavior as appropriate in response to feedback, suggestions, audit findings and performance reviews.Handles conflict constructively and effectively; recognizes own strengths and opportunities to improve.
- Stays up to date and provides evidence for Company required credentials; uses Company Learning platforms to complete Company mandated training and competencies (PDR's)
- Shares knowledge with others; assists with teaching team members in meeting required competencies.

- Complies with continuous quality improvement standards of the medical service.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Actively participates in departmental meetings.
- Promptly assists when needed in contributing to performance reviews that are fair, objective, and accurate.
Public Health and Infection Prevention and Control Responsibilities
- Maintains accurate and timely public health records in accordance with Company policy
- Demonstrates appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage and application of disease specific IPC measures to mitigate illness transmission.
- Undertake outbreak response tasks as directed by the Senior Doctor and Senior Nurse. Work as part of the Medical Team on the management of infectious diseases outbreaks onboard.
- Actively participates in implementation of preventative health and educational programs, and crew participation in wellness programs.
Medical Center Administration
- Consistently generates accurate and complete patient bills in compliance with Company proceduresAssists Senior Nurse in monitoring costs, expenditures, and inventory efficiencies; Suggests cost savings and revenue-enhancing initiatives.
- Consistently integrates responsible financial practices into and demonstrates fiscal compliance.
- Assists the Senior Nurse with inventory management by maintaining cost-efficient pharmacy and supplies par levels.
- Routinely and accurately performs routine facility, equipment and supplies checks per Company Policy, assists with continuous maintenance requirements, and reports any deficiencies in a timely fashion.
- Assist as directed with any operational and administrative tasks associated with day-to-day operation of the medical center.
- Schedules and coordinates patient visits, and follow-ups, health screening and wellness visits and vaccination programs.
- Proficient in the use of all IT systems applicable to the medical service and role requirements.
Safety and Compliance
- Adheres to the guidelines, policies, and principles of his or her applicable professional registration body.
- Routinely performs General Emergency Organization duties as directed in the Ship's Emergency Response Plan.
- Ensures compliance with MLC hours of Rest; demonstrates flexibility with on-call rosters and workload adjustments to meet operational needs.
- Stays up to date and complies with all applicable Company Procedures and standards in Global HESS, Operating Line procedures, other Company policies and relevant governmental regulations, and integrates them into practice.
- Identifies and reports any potential patient safety risks, and assists with investigations to analyze root cause, identify learning opportunities, and suggest corrective actions where necessary.
- Participates productively in audits and inspections and assists with development and implementation of corrective actions as needed.

Application requirements
Successful candidates must hold the following:
- A Registered Nurse qualification
- A currently valid professional registration with a regulatory body
- A minimum of three years of clinical experience after graduation
- Experience in acute medicine settings, including emergency, urgent care, or intensive care
- The most recent work experience should be in a clinical setting
- A valid ALS/ACLS certificate before joining a vessel
- A PALS certification is expected within the first year of employment
- A valid passport
- Eligibility to be issued a United States C1/D Visa (not applicable for US and Canadian citizens)
- Verbal and written fluency in English, both conversational and technical
- Computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft 365 productivity suite
- Experience with the use of electronic health records is preferred
- Outstanding interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills
