POSITION INFORMATION: The Nurse Educator oversees healthcare educational activities in the Stephenson Cancer Center's clinical settings which include issues related to clinical best practices, policies and procedures, infection control, prevention, skills maintenance, OU Medicine EXCEL, and the AAAHC Standards requirements. This person will implement, develop, and deliver educational programs.

SUMMARY: The overall goal for the Nurse Educator is to improve the knowledge and clinical skills of nurses and other clinical staff which enable them to provide the highest quality patient care in a safe clinical environment. Performs job under minimum supervision, functions as a role model, facilitator, educator, leader, and consultant to staff and management personnel. Consults with Clinic Managers and the Senior Clinic Administrator, as well as the Director of Nursing and Cancer Center leadership to develop relevant and quality training that supports staff development in the clinical setting. Able to demonstrate the ability to handle multiple conflicting education and training demands.


  • Provides Education. Provides specialized initial and subsequent nursing education related to clinic standards for patient and employee safety, infection control, triage, and other programs as identified. Responsible for Clinical Orientation: conducting, managing, developing curriculum, tracking attendance, follow-up training or instruction. Oversees all online clinical based education.

  • CPR training. Manages the CPR programs. Coordinates, trains, and tracks staff in CPR with AED for Healthcare Providers.

  • Program and Curriculum Development. Creates or assists with development of educational programs for staff with various levels of ability. Utilizes various methodologies and the nursing process in identifying, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing education activities. Takes into consideration the needs and values of the clinics, organization's mission, vision, goals, and resources, and the OU Medicine EXCEL standards of Behavior when planning/developing nursing education activities.

  • Program Evaluation. Provides ongoing evaluation of the educational programs and activities to ensure that they maintain and enhance professional development that promotes the delivery of high quality health care.

  • Collaboration. Collaborates with subject matter experts and content experts to develop activities to facilitate learners' achievement of educational objectives.

  • Evidence-Based Research. Uses evidence-based research to identify strategies for improving clinical professional development and the patient experience. Demonstrates importance of lifelong learning and continuing nursing education as essential for the provision of current, safe, and quality nursing care.

  • Professional competency. Assists clinics with employee competency skills checking and training. Maintains own clinical competence in their area of expertise.

  • Performance Improvement. Participates in performance improvement activities; quality improvement and patient safety activities; assists in maintaining compliance with AAAHC accreditation and other internal and external regulatory standards including the code of conduct.

  • Training Preparation. Develops and compiles training manuals and other training aids. Obtains necessary training equipment including training films, visual aids, etc.

  • Record Maintenance. Maintains documentation of training activities, participants, and training program effectiveness.

  • As Needed. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

Experience: 12 months professional nursing (RN) experience in healthcare specialty

Certifications/Licenses: Oklahoma Registered Nurse Certification, Basic Life Support certification


  • Demonstrates proficiency in computer word processing and presentation software.

  • Displays ongoing competence in area of expertise.

  • Demonstrated ability in training and educating clinical users.

  • Must be able to lift/carry 10 to 35 pounds


  • 3 5 years of clinical experience as a staff nurse

  • MSN or M.Ed. preferred

  • Experience with Adult and Children clinics

  • Previous experience in delivering educational activities related to the scope of nursing practice.

  • Experience in curriculum development and principles of teaching.

Interacts with physicians and data management in study conduct, attends study specific meetings, site initiation visit. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: * Physician Assistance. Collaborates with physicians to ensure protocol compliance. Under physician supervision, administer study medication and/or review study closing at each cycle in order to complete follow up procedures with the patient. * Information. Responsible for clinical data collection including PK and PD sampling and toxicity assessments and medication assessments. * Patient Prep/Follow Up. Counsels patient, family or legal guardian regarding side effects of oncology treatments and disease process. Assesses patient for protocol compliance and toxicity management. * Collaboration. Collaborates with other healthcare professionals to include but not limited to physicians, mid-level providers, and other clinical staff to provide efficient quality patient care. * Supervision. May instruct medical personnel in the use of highly specialized research equipment, drugs, etc. Directs and evaluates the work of staff to include but not limited to Clinic Clerks, Medical Assistants, and other Nurses. Acts as lead when worked performed requires minimum direct supervision. * Research. Participates in and contributes to oncology clinical research activities related to a specific oncology specialty. Coordinates with the CTO Lead Research Nurse and Director to develop and implement studies in assigned area. Coordinates research priorities for specified area. * Compliance. Collaborates with data management and regulatory specialists to develop action plans to address study protocol noncompliance. Represents site for sponsor-initiated and FDA audits. * Training. Educates research staff regarding new studies and treatment modalities. Must undergo chemotherapy and bio-therapy training. * Meetings and Conferences. Participates in conferences pertaining to research disease site. * As Needed. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position. Education: Associate's Degree in Nursing Certifications/Licenses: State of Oklahoma Registered Nurse Certification. BLS and CPR certification.
