Job Summary
Responsible for delivering healthcare services to inmates within a county jail facility. This role involves assessing and treating a wide range of medical conditions, as well as promoting overall health and wellness among incarcerated individuals. The County Jail Nurse collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the well-being of inmates while adhering to security protocols and county healthcare guidelines.
Job Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Administermedications, treatments, and therapeutic interventions as prescribed
Maintain accurate and confidential medical records for each inmate, documenting all assessments, treatments, and interventions
Work closely with correctional staff, mental health professionals, and other healthcare providers to coordinate care and address security concerns
Educate inmates about various health topics, including disease prevention, nutrition, and substance abuse, to promote healthier lifestyles
Administer vaccinations, conduct health screenings, and implement infection control measures to prevent the spread of diseases within the facility
Dispense and monitor medications, ensuring compliance with medication regimens and addressing any side effects or concerns
Participate in training on security protocols
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs general/clerical tasks
Develop and implement health promotion programs and initiatives within the jail to encourage healthier behaviors and reduce healthcare disparities
Any duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Education equivalent to an associate degree in nursing with 2 years of experience in a jail or similar environment.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess satisfactory results of a criminal history background check. Must maintain a Virginia nursing license. Must have valid CPR and ACLS certificates.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to handle medical emergencies, including injuries, overdoses, and psychiatric crises, while ensuring safety and security within the jail environment
Ability to conduct thorough medical assessments
Knowledge of correctional healthcare policies
Ability to adhere to state and county healthcare regulations
Ability to follow strict security procedures and guidelines to maintain the safety of both staff and inmates while delivering healthcare services
Strong assessment, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work in high stress environment
Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards
Working Conditions & Disclaimer
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as moderate. May involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (20 - 30 pounds). May involve long periods of standing. Assignments may require a rotating schedule which may include working evenings and weekends.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Essential functions are regularly performed in the medical unit within the jail.
