Are you interested in providing nursing consultation and technical assistance?

The Perinatal & Early Childhood Health Unit, located within the Section of Women's, Children's, and Family Health in the Division of Public Health, is seeking to fill a Nurse Consultant II position located in Anchorage.

Under the direction of the Perinatal and Early Childhood Unit Manager, this position serves as a Perinatal Nurse Consultant providing advanced expertise, technical assistance, and consultation for public and private sector health care professionals, facilities, and agencies on perinatal health topics. This can include, but is not limited to as newborn bloodspot screening, infant safe sleep, maternal depression, among other topics.

Key Responsibilities for this position include the following:

  • Leads and coordinate's Alaska's newborn bloodspot screening program.

  • Collaborates with health care providers, laboratory personnel, and birthing facilities to track the follow-up of newborns with abnormal or unsatisfactory newborn blood spot screening specimens.

  • Conducts site visits to provide consultation, training, and quality assurance data on the newborn bloodspot screening program to ensure compliance with state statutes and regulations.

  • Facilitates a statewide newborn bloodspot screening advisory committee comprised of professionals, consumers, and other stakeholders.

  • Designs and implements evaluation and quality improvement strategies related to perinatal health topics and newborn bloodspot screening.

  • Provides expertise and technical assistance to healthcare providers, facilities, and agencies on perinatal health topics.

  • Provides training and presentations to communities, health care providers, and stakeholders on perinatal health topics.

  • Develops and updates policies and procedures related to perinatal health using evidence-based research and literature.

  • Administers contracts or grants associated with program development and implementation.

  • Provides grant writing and reporting as needed for federal grants.

  • Creates and updates perinatal health educational materials for the public and health care providers.

A master's degree from an accredited college in nursing, public health, healthcare services, healthcare administration, or a closely related field;

Special Note:

An individual, without an Alaska license, who meets the experience qualifications and otherwise meets the eligibility requirements for licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Alaska may apply for the vacancy. The Department of Health and Social Services, Alaska Psychiatric Institute is seeking interested individuals to fill our On-Call Psychiatric Nurse II positions. Under the general supervision of a Nursing Shift Supervisor, these on-call, nonpermanent positions are responsible for 24-hour nursing care for either day, evening, or night shift for mentally-ill patients at Alaska Psychiatric Institute, Alaska Recovery Center. This position will work on an as-needed basis. Vacancies will be filled as soon as qualified applicants are identified. Essential duties of this position: * Provide skilled nursing care to patients; individualized patient assessment and care; participates in therapeutic activities as facilitator, or co-facilitator. * Administers medications to patients and provides education including expected outcomes, possible side effects, and any food/drug interactions. * Transcribe all orders, recording this information in each patient's Medication Administration Record (MAR) and chart regarding patient behavior and responses to medication treatment. * Completes nursing assessments on newly admitted patients, patients on close observation special status, or patients that may require emergency seclusion or restraint. * Determines and prioritizes individual nursing needs. Gives direction to Office Assistant IIs, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Psychiatric Nurse Assistants including work assignments and monitoring those assignments for both completion and accuracy. * Maintains the flow of patient care in relation to the patient's individual treatment plan, individualized interventions, and supports the Role Recovery Model. * Reports any changes in patient behavior, responses to treatment, or changes in overall status to the appropriate member of the Treatment Team. * Understand the importance of the unit milieu and explain unit programs to patients. * Trained in Team Solutions and is responsible to assure that all unit programs are accomplished each shift. * De-escalating unpredictable, dangerous, or violent behavior. Intervene non-verbally, verbally or physically with patients who may cause harm to themselves or others. * Recognize potential hazards to keep a safe and therapeutic environment. Make frequent rounds to check patient location and safety. * Under supervision, meets with family, significant others, consultants, and representatives of other healthcare agencies.
