Purpose:

UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital is hiring a Full-time Nurse Clinician to support Dual Diagnosis. This position will work daylight.

Functions as clinician on select cases and assists physicians as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend a minimum of 6 educational meetings offered within Institute or Outside Program

  • Provides routinely scheduled staff education on clinical issues

  • Role Models professional practice

  • Participates in on-going review and development and provision of Group Programming for the unit

  • Have knowledge of psychiatric diagnoses and be able to differentiate diagnosis on assigned patients.

  • Participates in interdisciplinary meetings and other activities

  • Monitors psychiatric, medical, psychosocial status of assigned team.

  • Maintains professional communication with multidisciplinary team members

  • Coordinates patient follow-up discharge plans and medical plans with Social Work and Primary Medicine respectively.

  • Actively participates in treatment team meetings.

  • Has good organizational skills that leads to effective time management.

  • Attend a minimum of 2 unit based inservices yearly

  • Provides education and consultation regarding psychiatric treatment, management, and psychopharmacology for staff

  • Completes documentation according to established policies and in timely fashion

  • Acts as liaison between disciplines, departments, and hospitals for assigned patients

  • Maintain competency requirements

  • Coordinates daily care for assigned team

  • Utilize up to date practices/information in delivery of patient care

  • Rounds daily on team of assigned patients and/or discuss patients with treatment team

  • Initiates or reviews admission paperwork of all assigned patients

  • Provides patient/family education around psychiatric medication/diagnosis as needed.

  • Coordinates and facilitates with MD and treatment team direct admissions and DEC admissions as assigned

  • Able to interface with various members of multidisciplinary team members to coordinate all aspects of patient care.

  • Leads routine therapeutic patient groups

  • Assesses client from holistic perspective.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Nursing or related field required

  • MSN preferred

  • Two years psychiatric nursing experience preferred

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

ANCC certification as CNS or ANP preferred

PA RN License required

CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC) Registered Nurse (RN) Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal Act 33 with renewal Act 34 with renewal Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital is seeking a dedicated full time psychiatric nurse to help support the 90%Dual Diagnosis (DD 10th Floor) Department for its Oakland location. This position will work day/night rotation, with three 12 hour shifts. Dual Diagnosis is an Adult Drug Abuse and Psychiatric Treatment Unit consisting of a 28-bed inpatient service. The focus is on treating adults with a primary psychiatric disorder and co-occurring chemical dependency problem. The Psychiatric Nurse is responsible for demonstrating clinical competence in the delivery of direct patient care and the implementation of the milieu management program. Responsibilities: * Maintains competency requirements. * Attends two unit-based or institute-wide inservices yearly. * Serves as mentor to students and new employees. * Learns and utilizes up-to-date technology in delivery of patients care. * Performs charge RN responsibilities competently and effectively. * Participates with unit management in Program Development and Performance Improvement Activities. * Performs a nursing assessment and initial plan of care within 8 hours of patient's admission. * Orients/educates patient regarding hospitalization. * Documents in the medical record according to established policies. * Maintains current knowledge of medication policies and practices, including side effects, dosage and patient response. * Completes medication administration safely and accurately, including transcription, administration and documentation according to established policies. * Demonstrates a working knowledge of DSM IV diagnosis as evidenced by individual, group and milieu therapeutic interventions. * Manages crisis situations effectively using positive approaches. * Adheres to Nursing Standards and Policies including ANA Standards for Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, ANA Professional Code for Nurses, the WPIC policies and procedures and the Nurse Practice Act. * Performs point of care testing per unit (i.e., glucose monitoring, urinalysis, Hemocults.) * Participates in interdisciplinary activities including, treatment team, staff meeting, co-worker feedback process and other committees as assigned. * Follows research protocols as required. Qualifications * Graduation from an approved School of Nursing required. * BSN preferred. * Six months of experience in Clinical Psychiatry preferred. * Successful completion of the central and unit specific orientation programs including the medication proficiency examination. * The incumbent must by physically capable of providing direct total physical care to unpredictable, potentially violent, mentally ill patients as necessary including lifting, supporting, running towards or away from areas where problems are occurring, and pushing and pulling equipment, such as, wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds.
