Summary:

The Pediatric Surgery-Trauma Bariatric Physician Assistant (PA) works in collaboration with a group of supervising surgeon(s) in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Autonomously performs patient assessments, diagnosis, and implements the appropriate plan of care based on evidence-based medical practices and approved guidelines. The position is responsible for treating the full range of general pediatric surgery and trauma patients with focus on adolescent pediatric surgery.

The PA provides competent and skilled care to patients and families, meeting their needs while adhering to the medical plan of treatment. This includes prescribing various treatment modalities such as hospital admissions and discharges, outpatient clinic visits, first-assisting in surgery, and prescriptive authority.

This position responds to trauma activations and consults in the ED and other hospital settings where general pediatric surgery, trauma, or bariatric patient may be located (e.g. PICU, NICU, or surgical floor, etc.). The PA evaluates general surgical consults in the ED and inpatient setting, participates in daily rounding on inpatients, and provides outpatient clinic coverage. The PA also delivers care with a team-oriented approach, with an emphasis on good customer relations, sound clinical judgment and appropriate decision-making abilities that take into consideration evidenced-based practice.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college is required.

2 years of First Assist surgical experience preferred.

Master's Degree in Physician Assistant studies preferred.

Experience with minor surgical procedures and surgical assisting preferred.

Previous experience in Acute Care surgical setting that includes pediatric patients preferred.

Completion of PA surgical residency may be considered in lieu of First Assist preferred experience.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification

Physician Assistants

Current Texas professional physician assistant license

Certified as a PA-C

Current Basic Life Support (CPR) required

Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)*

Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)*

Current Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)*

  • Must have completed PALS, ACLS, and ATLS during new employee orientation and maintain current certifications after hire.
