Department Position Purpose

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as part of a multidisciplinary health care team, providing a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for the patients of the outpatient services as a member of the Department of Surgery/ Division of Colorectal Surgery.

The APP will have a strong foundation in evidence based practice and ensure an environment of safe quality care.

Provides specialty medical care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/Froedtert Health policies and procedures.

Core Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.

  • Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.

  • Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.

  • Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.

  • Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.

  • Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.

  • Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.

  • Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.

  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors, along with preoperative and post-operative care.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant conditions requiring surgical intervention in outpatient environment as a member of the Colorectal Surgery services.

  • Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.

  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.

  • Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the Colorectal Surgery services.

  • Occasionally works as assist in surgery, particularly using the robotic platform.

  • Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.

  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.

  • Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.

  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.

  • Coordinates surgeries and provides independent post-surgical follow-up care.

Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse

Master's Degree or higher in Nursing

Physician Assistant

Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Prior Experience:

  • Zero years of experienced required

Preferred Experience:

Prior experience working as an independent Advanced Practice Provider is highly desired

Certifications / Licenses

  • CITI Certification to be completed within 90 days of hire

  • Valid DEA number required.

Physician Assistant

  • Wisconsin PA license

  • Certification by NCCPA

  • AHA BCLS

  • CITI Certification to be completed within 90 days of hire

  • Valid DEA number required.
