Summary:

Authority and responsibility for the overall administration of nursing care for North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital. Accountable for planning, organizing, evaluating and administering all nursing functions to assure that:

1)Nursing standards and practices are consistent with the requirements of accrediting and regulatory bodies; provides resources for quality monitoring and quality improvement of nursing care;

2)Resources are available to provide patient care and are utilized in a cost-effective manner;

3)Cooperative working relationships are maintained within the nursing department, with the medical staff and with other health care professionals;



  1. Foster professional growth of the nursing profession and individual practitioner through the development of programs to promote nursing research, education and best practice. Assess skill level of nursing staff; determine what is needed to provide quality, safe care for patient population served.

Education:

The Director will be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing. A Masters Degree or national certification as a Nurse Administrator is preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

Must possess registration with the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.

Experience/Skills:

Experience in a supervisory position in nursing service in which executive ability has been demonstrated is required. Membership in a professional organization is encouraged.

Responsibilities:

1.Collaborates with the NORH Board of Managers, Administrator and medical staff in the development of multi-service programs and mechanisms which promote the education and advancement of the nursing staff members. Responsible for planning the on-going and future activities and resources of the Nursing Division and its respective departments to assure the provision of safe, quality patient care consistent with the mission of the hospital and the medical staff and the Standards of Practice of the State of Louisiana and other regulatory bodies.

A. Identify changes needed to improve the quality of nursing care; recommend the redesign of NORH services when indicated for the purpose of meeting patient needs, efficiency, effectiveness, best practices of the profession and field trends in the specialty.

B. Plan for resources necessary to provide for patient care consistent with the mission of the hospital, quality standards, safety, regulatory standards, patient experience results, and industry best practice.

C. Annually appraise the educational needs of Nursing. Provides adequate resources required for orientation of new employees, in-service education and continuing education.

D. Develop Standards of Practice for nursing consistent with established standards for nursing practice.

E. Facilitate the provision of an easily accessible setting for patients and visitors. Discuss plans to improve accessibility and remove barriers as necessary.

F. Recommend and implement hospital policy and formulate and implement Nursing Division policies.

G. Maintain adequate resources, including labor, supplies and equipment, for the delivery of Patient Care Services.

H. Provide leadership in the determination of clinical and administrative nursing goals and directions.

I. Participate in the determination of functions and processes to achieve clinical and administrative goals.

J .Assist in the development of hospital-wide Quality Improvement Standards that are performance based.

K. Evaluate and revise the systems and processes of organized nursing services to enhance achievement of functional independent measures and identified desired client/family-centered outcomes.

L. Provide leadership and role modeling in critical thinking, conflict management and problem solving.

M. Provide leadership in human resource development, skill enhancement, and management.

N. Provide environment and practices that elicit consumer input into personal health care decisions and policy development.

O. Serve as a professional role model and mentor to motivate, develop, recruit and retain future nursing personnel.

P. Demonstrate understanding and competency in age specific criteria as applicable to job scope.

Q. Provide for an on-going nursing Quality Assurance and Improvement Program which monitors the Quality of Patient Care Delivery for each clinical area as well as each individual served.

R. Communicate regularly with medical staff to identify and resolve problems related to patient care.

S. Provide for timely resolution of patient/family problems.

T. Assist in developing, administering, and managing budgetary guidelines and goals.

U. Provide a supportive environment for nursing employees engaged in the practice of nursing.

V. Serve as a change agent, assisting all staff in understanding the importance, necessity, impact and process of change. Engage staff in problem solving activities.

I. Promote participation of the Nursing Division within the community. Encourage and support hospital-related activities, which benefit the community and service areas surrounding North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital.

II. Follow North Oaks Health System's Compliance Programs and Federal and State guidelines.
