We are seeking a nonproliferation chemical process engineer who will focus on preparation and handling of uranium materials and reactive gases to support ongoing nonproliferation research. This work will be performed as part of a multi-disciplinary team focused on the application of uranium chemical processing for national nuclear security missions. This position resides in the Material Security and Counterproliferation Group in the Material Modelding & Characteraization section, Nuclear nonproliferation Division, national security sciences directorate at ORNL.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manage support work for various nonproliferation research efforts across ORNL. This includes communication with the relevant organizations, planning and execution of experimental work, and communication of results.

  • Perform experiments, collect data, and summarize observations.

  • Design, build, and operate process equipment including reactive gas handling systems and associated control and monitoring systems.

  • Contribute as a team member and assist research and technical staff with day-to-day laboratory operations and maintenance.

  • All duties are performed in chemical laboratory and processing environments with a high level of attention to detail and adherence to safe work practices that such activities demand.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in STEM field or advanced technical degree and two or more years' relevant experience in process chemical/engineering. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Experience working with radioactive material and familiarity with accepted radiological laboratory practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Operational familiarity with uranium processing equipment at pilot or production scales.

  • Experience with design and operation of vacuum systems.

  • Electrical work experience including implementation of process control systems and data acquisition.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements:

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

HSPD-12 PIV badge: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.

Q clearance with SCI: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
