Non-Tenure Track (Open Rank) Specialized Faculty

School of Architecture

The School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applicants to fill one or more Specialized Faculty positions. These positions are non-tenure track and will be between zero to 100% time, depending on the School's needs. Specialized Faculty teach assigned courses throughout the semester such as design studios, history lectures, and structures/technology lectures, etc.

General responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses for the School of Architecture in one or more instructional fields (on-campus, online, or hybrid), mentoring and overseeing Graduate Teaching Assistants as needed, and meeting with instructors of other sections when appropriate.

Teaching Areas:

General Design:

Responsibilities include teaching studio at the undergraduate or graduate levels, design seminars, and/or design workshop in collaboration with studio sequence coordinators. The successful candidates will demonstrate a track record of excellence in teaching architecture design studios, representation skills, and computer software.

Digital Fabrication and Computation:

Responsibilities include teaching studio or design seminars at the undergraduate and graduate levels The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of digital technologies, their applicability in theory and practice, and their ability to teach how to use them and apply them in the architectural process.

Building Performance:

Responsibilities may include teaching building design, technology, building systems, construction methods, and practices to help and advance building and environmental technologies in lecture of seminar courses. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of the integration of building envelopes, materials, systems, and performance modeling.

History, Theory, Criticism:

Responsibilities include teaching survey and seminars courses on Architectural history and theory from ancient to present at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively teach courses that include diverse and inclusive perspectives and narratives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Adjunct Instructor: Master's degree in a field related to the course(s) to be taught. Lesser degrees will be considered if accompanied by significant professional experience.

  • Adjunct Lecturer: Terminal degree in a field related to the course(s) to be taught.

  • Teaching Assistant Professor: Terminal degree in a field related to the course(s) to be taught

Preferred Qualifications (All Ranks):

  • Three years of combined teaching and professional experience in a field relevant to the intended field of instruction. Merit-based exceptions to this qualification will be considered.

Proposed Starting Date:

9-month appointments: August 16, 2024

Fall-semester appointments: August 16, 2024

Spring-semester appointments: January 1, 2025

Salary: Commensurate with rank and experience, but the minimum salary for full-time positions is $60,000. The minimum salary for Adjunct Instructor/Lecturer positions is $9,250 per course taught.
