Department Overview

The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, a pond, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and the quality of life through the support of nonhuman primate research programs that advance our knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases.

Function/Duties of Position

Administrative:

Under direct supervision, primarily provides general administrative support for a project, team, or work unit. Similar to an Office Clerk or Specialist*. May also include some basic data entry and report generation.

Research:

Laboratory procedures will include assisting other research assistants in data management, construction of databases and developing image analysis protocols. Other lab work potentially includes working with animals, mouse colony management, PCR genotyping, immunohistochemistry of fixed NHP tissue and running ELISA assays. Additional minor duties will include data entry and analysis and general laboratory maintenance.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Enrolled in or on vacation from or is otherwise registered in (check one):
  • High School, WA
  • (X ) Undergraduate Program (minimum 6 credit hours), OR
  • Graduate Program (minimum 4.5 credit hours)

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Courses in Chemistry, Natural Science or Biology

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and graphics software

  • Demonstrated independence and competence to perform data management and analysis of research finding, including use of spreadsheets, graphics and statistical programs

  • Ability to communicate effectively, including use and meaning of basic scientific terminology, in both written and oral formats

  • Ability to work both under close supervision and in a small group setting

  • Ability to interact in a positive and productive manner, and to work efficiently and skillfully with a variety of diverse staff

  • Ability to coordinate research protocols with other staff

  • Organizational skills and careful attention to details to satisfactorily perform job duties

Additional Details

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work schedule is variable depending on work load, but not to exceed 40 hours per week

  • Work is performed in a laboratory setting, which carries a potential risk of exposure to chemicals, biohazard materials, dry ice, and low-level radioactivity

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & EQUIPMENT USAGE:

  • Ability to lift/move equipment weighing up to 30 lbs. Ability to stand for several continuous hours
