TheCAE Engineer for Noise and Vibration (N&V) will perform complex Finite Element Analysis (FEA)for the purpose of predicting Noise and Vibration performance to metrics,developing and integrating solutions in vehicle designs to ensure programrequirements are met.


  • Perform analytical simulations to evaluate noise and vibrationperformance in full vehicle structures and subsystems or components as needed.

  • Build, debug and exercise FEA models using CAE software.

  • Generate technical solutions for current and future programs tomeet N&V performance targets with mass and cost efficiency.

  • Present results and generate actionable recommendations based onanalysis in order to improve and lead the design.

  • Produce and communicate concisesummaries.

  • Perform design optimization using design of experiments (DOE)methods and commercial software.

  • Utilize Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodology to identify, driveand optimize critical procedures and designs.

  • Assist in developing new CAE techniques by developing, evaluatingand customizing new simulation tools, software, and procedures related tomodeling, solver parameters and material characterization.

  • Keep up to date with latest CAE tools/trends, occasionallyparticipate in training and technical workshops.

  • Stay abreast of new technology and competitive products.

  • Correlate CAE models with physical test data as needed toestablish accuracy in CAE models, work with test laboratories to measure andinterpret physical N&V test data.

  • Carry out Closed-Loop Learning activities to expand CAE capability

  • Actively participate in N&V Performance Integration Team (PIT),Structural Integration (SI) and Design Product Development Team (PDT) meetings towork through packaging issues, mass and cost impact of solutions.

  • Participate in Global CAE Product & Technical Focus Groups andother work groups as requested.

Minimum Education and ExperienceRequired

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineering area orphysics with understandingof material properties as inputs to CAE analysis
  • 2 years of CAE experience


  • Masterof Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineeringarea or physics

  • Educationor experience preferred to include:

  • Theoryand application of vibro-acoustics (analytical and experimental) andfinite element analysis.

  • Design,development, and optimization of vehicle structures

  • Static,dynamic, thermal and fatigue analyses for chassis, frames, body,interior, and powertrain structures

  • Boundaryelement methods (BEM) and Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) for vibro-acousticsimulations.

  • Goodunderstanding of establishing loads and boundary conditions for FEAmodeling and analysis.

  • 5 yearsof experience in using CAE methods for structural design, development& analysis

  • Laboratorytesting experience with LMS Test.Lab software or other data acquisition instrumentation

  • Highdegree of analytical ability (root cause failure analysis) where problemsare complex or difficult.

  • Experienceworking globally with regional partners

VIEW JOBS 3/19/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-06-17T00:00 Major Duties/ Responsibilities: * Responsible for Crashworthiness development of vehicle structure/ occupant restraints concepts for GM Vehicle Programs. * Uses CAE to lead the vehicle design, while balancing all applicable Global Safety Requirements for specific area of responsibility (i.e. Frontal Impacts). * Performs Computer Aided Engineering simulations to evaluate full vehicle crashworthiness performance for high speed Frontal, Side, Rear impacts or low speed Front and Rear load cases, etc. using LS-DYNA software. * Capable of handling standard Crashworthiness load cases, including the most complex. * Generates sound and timely technical solutions to meet vehicle crashworthiness performance targets outlined in the Vehicle Technical Specifications and balances safety requirements based on the results of crash simulations for the major safety load cases. * Generates feasible vehicle design recommendations and works with engineering functions, program teams, suppliers, manufacturing and others to implement design changes as required to achieve vehicle performance. * Conducts optimization studies by utilizing optimization CAE tools, including DOE/ DFSS techniques to optimize vehicle designs to meet performance requirements while minimizing mass and cost. * Uses advanced CAE tools and methods to optimize the structural designs. Improves structural efficiency - achieves improved performance with less mass (topology, shape, weld/adhesive, gauge, lightweight materials, etc.). * Utilizes GM Safety CAE standard work procedures for all simulations and assures high quality models * Attends post-test teardowns at the Vehicle Proving Grounds to interpret measurements, conduct analysis, and correlate CAE to test results. * Works with people around the world in global and collaborative environment. * Produces concise management summaries and report-outs that meet the needs of directors and Chief Engineers. * DFSS Black Belt certification * Bachelors, Masters or Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering from an (ABET) accredited University.: Mechanical, Aero, Civil, Materials, Mechanics, Applied Physics * Previous experience (2 years) in full vehicle crashworthinesssimulation or performingoccupant protection simulations using LS-DYNA software to lead/ optimizethe design of occupant restraint systems in frontal & side impacts or performingADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) Simulations using CarMaker (or similarsoftware) or leading pedestrian protection activities throughout thevehicle development process from styling through validation. * Demonstrated proficiency in LS-DYNA, PRIMER, ANIMATOR, ANSA, HYPERWORKS and other CAE tools. * Knowledge of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Global Safety Requirements and Standards. * Knowledge of statistical and optimization tools and techniques * Knowledge of engineering theory and application in automotive structures development * Excellent oral and written communication skills * Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others * High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual or difficult and ability to integrate complex systems * High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others * Familiarity with manufacturing processes General Motors Warren MI
