Position Specific Responsibilities

NIAR's Crash Dynamics Lab is looking for a Research Engineer that supports and leads daily aerospace and automotive crash testing projects to ensure on time completion and customer satisfaction. Plans and prepares test setup, performs testing to the test procedure and standards, records and analyzes data, and builds reports.

Summary of Responsibilities

Independently interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates research assignments in a field or specialization of an engineering discipline. Formulates and conducts research on problems of considerable scope and complexity. Explores subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies or series of projects of lesser scope.

Essential Functions

  • Interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates engineering research assignments concerned with unique or controversial problems. Applies diversified knowledge of engineering research principles, practices, and protocols in research projects; makes recommendations and conclusions which serve as the basis for decision making in a specialty area. Formulates and conducts systematic problem analysis and resolution in an area of considerable scope and complexity through series of complete and conceptually related studies, or through a variety of projects of lesser scope. Receives administrative supervision, with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits.

  • Develops model concepts and approaches as an individual researcher and acts independently on technical matters.

  • Collaborates with users and principal investigators on design, analysis, application, and reporting of research projects; provides technical leadership and technique consultation.

  • May prepare analyses, reports, and other documentation for publication; presents findings at local, national, and/or international meetings. May prepare, or assist with the preparation of, materials for grant proposals to obtain funding in support of research activities.

  • Serves as investigator on single or multiple projects of complexity and scope consistent with above criteria, and/or manages a research unit. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.

Requirements

Minimum Education

Bachelor's degree in related field by hire date

Preferred Education

Master's degree in Engineering with an emphasis in Biomechanics or Crashworthiness

Minimum Experience

Two (2) years of related experience.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working with electrical systems, data acquisition and instrumentation, and ATD calibration and testing

  • Operation and maintenance of a servo-hydraulic accelerator crash sled system

  • Working experience with NI Diadem (Visual Basic Script) and TEMA photogrammetry software

  • Knowledge of Virtual Engineering modeling and simulation for crashworthiness

  • Design or drafting (CAD/CAM) experience with CATIA V5

  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Understand, implement, and follow automotive and aerospace crash testing standards (SAE) and regulations (FMVSS, NCAP, EuroNCAP, 14 CFR 23-29.562)

  • Comfortable using hand and power tools on a daily basis to prepare customer test setups

  • Ability to interact effectively with domestic and international customers and staff

  • Takes initiative and be self-motivated

  • Demonstrated reliability and ability to manage time effectively

  • Read, interpret, and develop technical drawings and documents

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Work independently and in a team environment that results in customer satisfaction
