We're looking for a News Producer to join the New Food Economy's editorial team. The ideal candidate will love breaking new stories, obsess over analytics and engagement statistics, and relish the opportunity to implement strategy and structure as part of a small-but-mighty, fast-paced newsroom.

You're a creative thinker who's willing to do whatever it takes to maximize each story's reach, and yet you're structured, meticulous, and organized enough to submit bomb-proof copy and measure campaign results over time. This is a huge opportunity for the right fit: You'll help shape the public voice of a quickly growing magazine, help craft the visual presentation of our stories, and be a key strategic player who grows as we do.

Though not a reporting position per se, the news producer will be an important figure on the editorial team, and we'll rely on your writing and editing skills all the time. We're looking for someone with strong storytelling instincts who can craft an engaging narrative in 140 characters, 25 seconds of video, or a 500-word text post.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Help grow NFE's public presence with smart, engaging, typographically flawless social media copy

Produce articles using our WordPress CMS

Intuitively understand which aspects of our stories will resonate with our readers across different platforms

Work with our audience dev team to relay feedback to editorial and implement strategy

Follow and engage with other major voices in the food media space

Write short posts and news pieces as needed

Must be an obsessive reader and news junkie

Ability to follow (and help shape) the social conversation at high-profile conferences and events

Nail New Food Economy's voice every time

Identify opportunities for cross-promotion and collaborate with syndication partners

Make and distribute videos for social media

Make and distribute additional graphics for social media

QUALIFICATIONS:

1-2+ years of social media experience for a publication

1-2+ years experience with production in WordPress and Mailchimp, including basic HTML

Deep familiarity with writing and strategy for the major social networks, including paid promotions and back-end analytics

Photo, video, and audio production skills as major plus, including familiarity with Canva, Infogram, and Photoshop

Reporting and/or editorial experience a plus

Strong attention to detail and ability to uphold editorial standards across a range of platforms

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment

A sense of humor and deep intellectual curiosity

Up-to-date knowledge of the media space in general and the food media space in particular

Interest and experience in the world of food a plus

WHY WORK FOR US

We have one of the most interesting, dynamic, fraught, fast-changing, and delicious beats on the planet. The work is fascinating.

The perks are tasty. And while we're fiercely dedicated to covering the ever-evolving food system (and by "food system" we mean pretty much everything from the farm to the fork), we're even more dedicated to thoughtful, unbiased reporting that challenges our readers' perceptions of the dichotomies we take for granted: big vs. small, local vs. global, urban vs. rural, fresh vs. frozen. We come into the office ready to challenge conventional wisdom every day, and we definitely don't always agree with each other. Also, we work from home sometimes and our office has kombucha on tap.

This is a full-time paid position based in New York. To apply, please email a cover letter and CV with the reference "News Producer" in the subject line to jobs@newfoodeconomy.com. Please include a writing sample and your social media handles.

We're looking for someone who is excited to grow their skills in nonprofit operations and can work on tasks big and small to further Chalkbeat's expansion. Our ideal candidate views operations from a customer service perspective, as a positive support to the organization's staff and overall mission, and never as a bureaucratic obstacle to serving the needs of our team. You'll join a tightly-knit operations team responsible for talent, finance, and systems development, and you'll interact regularly with our editorial, product, and development teams as part of our vibrant remote culture. The key responsibilities for this role include: Coordinating talent work as we build a larger team and support our existing staff, including: * Posting jobs and screening applications * Scheduling interviews and serving as a point of contact for candidates throughout the hiring process * Managing our applicant tracking software * Supporting new employee onboarding * Maintaining employee records in our human resources software and document management system * Supporting annual open enrollment and ongoing benefits administration * Managing paperwork for Chalkbeat's freelance contributors Providing a wide range of operations support as we serve our current team and expand to new geographies, including: * Office support for our New York City headquarters, bureaus and remote work spaces * Logistics support for team and community events * Researching and purchasing of centralized services * Coordinating shared subscriptions and accounts * Preparing documentation for our annual audit Providing smart logistics and executive support for our Chief Operating Officer and management team, including: * Scheduling and coordinating a variety of team meetings * Researching and booking cost-effective and efficient travel * Managing expense reporting for our COO and for our central purchasing card What background and skills do you have? (We know not all strong candidates will have all the skills we list. That's OK. What else do you bring to the table? Please tell us!): * Great task management skills, problem-solving ability, and superior attention to detail * Strong customer service mindset * Experience using discretion when communicating about sensitive topics * Ability to build trusting relationships with Chalkbeat's full team, even in a virtual setting * Flexible and comfortable in a work environment where multitasking is the norm, the pace is fast, and priorities will evolve * Proficient with office software, primarily the Google Suite * At least 1-2 years of relevant work experience (e.g. nonprofit operations, human resources, executive support) * Bachelor's degree preferred Bonus points if you've got: * Curiosity about education or nonprofit journalism, and a connection to our mission * Experience with the project management tool Asana * Experience with human resources software and policies The position will be based at our New York office, conveniently located near Penn Station. This is a full-time position with benefits. Chalkbeat offers a competitive salary, commensurate with experience, and a generous benefits package, including a paid winter recess from December 26-31. About Chalkbeat: Chalkbeat is the nonprofit news organization committed to covering one of America's most important stories: the effort to improve schools for all children, especially those who have historically lacked access to a quality education. We are mission-driven journalists who believe that an independent local press is vital to ensuring that education improves. Currently in seven locations and growing, we seek to provide deep local coverage of education policy and practice that informs decisions and actions, leading to better schools. Read more about our mission and values. How to Apply: Please send PDFs of your resume and a cover letter explaining your interest in the position and where you heard about it to careers@chalkbeat.org.
