While our laptop coverage is our claim to fame, as the pulse of mobile tech, we bring the same geeky passion to a number of areas, such as tablets, audio, gaming, and so much more. We test and review more than 150 laptops a year.

What you'll be doing...

At Laptop Mag, we are hiring a full-time News Editor to join our team. You will have the opportunity to assign and contextualize technology news for our audience of tech experts and the technology-curious. 

The ideal candidate can connect the dots for writers via written assignments, setting them up for success. The right person is familiar with significant and emerging trends in the world of mobile computing and prides themselves on publishing inclusive, accessible journalism for an audience that finds those stories in general interest spaces like Google News, Apple News, Flipboard, and more.

The position reports to the Laptop Mag’s Editor in Chief. It will be based at Laptop Mag’s New York City headquarters, where you will find a collaborative and supportive work environment. The position offers room for advancement and growth that’s in line with Laptop’s goals for editorial quality, innovation, and audience engagement.

• Updating and managing an editorial calendar of events that’s in part based on developing stories.
• Share in planning coverage of events in conjunction with other editors.
• Share in assigning angled, sometimes prescriptive stories to journalists of varying experience levels.
• Line editing news stories, working with writers on ledes, nut grafs, and voice.
• Share in headline writing and coaching.
• Prioritizing news coverage and knowing when to hold something for the next day vs. addressing it immediately.
• Share in assigning “Day 2” stories, live blogs, previews, and follow-up stories.
• Develop relationships with every player in the laptop and computing industry so you can receive press releases, embargo offers, tips, and other essentials for the News Editor role.
• Help writers with breaking stories by capturing quotes, taking notes, screenshots, and other assistance.
• File one piece of newly crafted preview content per week
• Play a role in twice-weekly newsletter curation and creation

Experience that will put you ahead of the curve...

• At least four years of editing technology news in a fast-paced environment.
• Can write a first pass of a breaking story before handing it off to a writer.
• Can update a developing story as needed.
• Has evidence of elevating a news story beyond the facts to why it matters and how it connects to other related issues.
• A deep understanding and proven experience with SEO best practices.
• Demonstrable experience working cross-functionally with audience and SEO teams.

Please note, the salary range for this position is $64,000-$69,000

This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Future US, Inc. and the Writers Guild of America East 

This is a Hybrid role from our New York Office, working three days from the office, two from home
