Who we are: Spectrum Networks is a series of 27 hyper-local news and 9 regional sports networks owned and operated by Charter Communications, Inc. Spectrum Networks seeks to provide the most essential local news and information, cultivating relevant and thoughtful conversations that foster informed and engaged communities.

The Environment: Spectrum News is a 24-hour breaking news network which requires employees who are flexible and available to work various shift, including early morning, late evenings, weekends and holidays.

What we're looking for:

Research and write news scripts for assigned shows and newscasts. Contribute to special features and stories. Participate in coordinating coverage of major stories, breaking news and specials.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Shoots b-roll and conducts interviews

  • Reports relevant information back to station from scene of news events

  • Assist producers and shift managers with editing and writing responsibilities

  • Can be assigned to newsroom or field duty as needed

  • Assists Reporters with gathering b-roll and interviews

  • Assists Reporters and Truck Operators during live shots and live events

  • Checks equipment and notifies ENG of equipment problems

  • Makes sure tapes or P2 cards are properly labeled before being ingested

  • Enters information into Planning Grid and researches stories for Assignment Desk

Qualifications:

Skill/Abilities and Knowledge

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English

  • Strong broadcast news writing ability

  • Ability to anticipate situations and meet strict deadlines

  • Interpersonal skills and excellent collaboration skills

  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment and interact with all personnel within the organization

  • Knowledge of current events and industry trends

  • Attention to detail

  • Familiarity with the local market

  • Knowledge of social media platforms

  • Must be able to work rapidly and accurately

  • Working knowledge of general office computer software, newsroom software and basic non-linear editing systems a plus

  • Basic editing skills

  • Must be able and willing to work different shifts and be flexible with schedule changes

Education & Experience:

  • High School diploma required; Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism or related field or comparable television work experience preferred
  • 1 year Television news experience

  • Overtime may be required to meet deadlines

  • Varying schedule due to, breaking news and/or daily news coverage requirements

  • Provide 24x7, 365 days per year, on-call support. May entail phone or physical presence at the facility for equipment failure or other disasters. This includes, but is not limited to equipment and power failures, loss of contracted services, storms or severe weather, and schedule conflicts

  • Participation in an established on-call rotation

VIEW JOBS 6/4/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-09-02T00:00 Summer Interns Investigative Reporting Workshop | Washington, D.C. | Posted: 01.12.2018 The Investigative Reporting Workshop, a nonprofit news organization based at the American University School of Communication in Washington, is looking for smart, engaged college students and recent graduates from around the country for internships in the summer of 2018. Positions include researchers, data journalists, videographers, graphic designers and web producers. Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Preferred majors include journalism, communication, film, public policy, public health, history or economics. The Workshop publishes in-depth stories about government and corporate accountability, on topics ranging widely from the environment and health to national security and the economy. The Workshop pairs students with experienced professional reporters and editors and co-publishes with mainstream media partners as well as other nonprofit news sites. Partners include PBS FRONTLINE and The Washington Post. The stipend for all positions is $17 an hour for 30 hours a week. Positions run from 7 to 10 weeks, with start dates as early as May 15 or as late as June 4, depending on the end date of an individual student's spring semester. All Workshop internships end Aug. 1. Housing and transportation are not provided, although AU dorms are open to applicants from other schools. The application deadline is Feb. 1.
