The district is tdeveloping a list of qualified and willing mentors at each high school for all subject areas for the 2023-24 school year.

Mentor qualifications according to the N.J. Administrative Code (6A:9C-5.2) are:

• Holds a Standard Instructional Certificate and, when possible, is certified in the subject area in which the novice provisional teacher is working

• Has at least 3 years of experience and has taught full-time for at least 2 years within the last 5 years

• Does not serve as the novice teacher's direct supervisor nor conduct evaluations of teachers

• Demonstrates a record of success in the classroom, including a summative rating of "effective" or "highly effective" on the most recent summative evaluation

• Understands the social and workplace norms of the school district and the community it serves

• Understands the resources and opportunities available in the school district and is able to act as a referral source to the novice provisional teacher

• Completes a comprehensive mentor training program with a curriculum that includes, at a minimum, training on the district's teaching evaluation rubric and practice instrument, Professional Standards for Teachers, NJSLF, classroom observation skills, facilitating adult learning, and leading reflective conversations about teaching practice.

The novice provisional teacher must be mentored for 30 weeks.

Compensation for mentors depends on the qualification held by the novice provisional teacher:

• If the novice provisional teacher holds a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS), meaning a graduate of a teacher preparation program, the stipend is $550.

• If the novice provisional teacher holds a Certificate of Eligibility (CE), meaning not a graduate of a teacher prep program (so called "alternate route"), the stipend is $1,000.

• Stipends may be prorated depending on the number of weeks/30 that the mentor provided mentoring for the novice provisional teacher.

• Stipends are paid during the school year at the next practicable payroll after the 30 weeks of mentoring have concluded.
