PURPOSE OF POSITION:

New Student Mentors will provide direct outreach and support to incoming and first term students as well as support to currently enrolled students. Outreach will include modalities such as email and phone calls in addition to face-to-face support in the Wacheno Welcome Center. Individuals in this position will assist students with accessing the college's online systems and registering for classes. Mentors will also connect students to specific service areas (i.e. Financial Aid, Advising, and Career Center) as well as other resources available to them (i.e. Counseling, Food Pantry, etc.). Mentors may also facilitate onboarding and skill building sessions for incoming and current students. This position works in a fast-paced customer service-oriented environment and frequently communicates with students in person, via email, and on the phone.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:.

  • Student Support (95%)

  • Serve as a designated representative of the Clackamas CC student services areas.

  • Partner with Clackamas CC service staff to support students with getting registered and prepared to start classes.

  • Greet and provide assistance to students.

  • Help identify and clarify student needs and provide resource information and connections.

  • Answer questions in-person, via emails, and via phone calls to support students in getting registered and prepared for classes.

  • Support students in understanding basic steps to getting started at the college and help create a welcoming and inclusive space for all students to ask questions and make connections.

  • Connect students with service areas and schedule appointments for students.

  • Help students with account log-ins and accessing their accounts and other basic online functions.

  • Assist students with registering for classes in the online system.

  • Be familiar with and refer students to the different student services and resources housed in the Wacheno Welcome Center (i.e. Financial Aid, Advising, Counseling, Lab, Food Pantry, Benefits Navigator, Transportation).

Office Support (5%)

  • Maintain space in a clean and orderly manner.

  • Provide basic support for other college employees.

GENERAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, other agencies, and the general public.

  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.

  • Participate in college committees when requested.

  • Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility, which may require travel.

  • Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.

  • Maintain student confidentiality, data integrity, and comply with all related college, state, and federal standards, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

  • Enrolled in at least 6 credits at CCC (enrollment requirement waived in summer term)

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The position requires limited (0-20%) ability to use dexterity and fine motor skills assemble, build or repair machines or other objects. Occasional (21-50% of the time) use of office equipment.

The position requires little (0-5%) physical effort such as lifting, carrying, or movement, etc. Movements required to complete work are not difficult, and only require a usual degree of agility and hand eye coordination.

The work environment is well protected, with virtually no hazards or obstacles (0-5%). There is very little element of personal risk or hazard. Job conditions are usually stable, with virtually no (0-5%) issues of confinement, temperature change, incident of noise, or interactions of a disagreeable nature, inside/outside work, dirty conditions, exposure to contagious disease, etc.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel, and may assign work to student workers.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general direction of the Director of Student and Academic Support Services.
