New Graduate Registered Nurse (RN) - Emergency Department (ED)

Full-time / Day-Shift (7:00am-7:00pm)

UM Charles Regional - La Plata, MD

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR POSITION TITLE:. Manager, Nursing and/or Nursing Supervisor

SUMMARY: Functioning under direct supervision of a registered RN, the Nursing Graduate is the beginning practitioner with a basic generic nursing education background.

This level clinician utilizes the nursing process in providing patient care and patient/family teaching. The practitioner in this position cares for selected patients and participates as a member of the health care team. Patients served may include neonate through adult-geriatric.

The Nursing Graduate shall practice only under the direct supervision of a nurse who is physically present on the unit to cosign medication transcription, medication administration and nursing documentation; and continually observe, assist, coordinate, evaluate, and monitor the nursing graduate. The nursing graduate must also use the initials "NG" after their name as credentials.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This job has no supervisory responsibility.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: To qualify for the position, the candidate must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Successful completion of required nursing, hospital and unit orientation including but not limited to BCLS certification. Candidate must pass the NCLEX examination within 90 days of graduation.

CONDITIONS: The Nursing Graduate will be required to use the initials "NG" after their name as their credentials.

The Nursing Graduate will remain in this position for no more than 90 days from the date of graduation from an accredited school of nursing. With a satisfactory performance evaluation and the passing of the NCLEX examination, the Nursing Graduate will advance to a Clinical Nurse I. If the evaluation is not satisfactory, the Nursing Graduate may be terminated.

  • Demonstrated ability to accurately collect data

  • Ability to establish facts regarding patient/family condition

  • Ability to identify problems

  • Ability to prioritize the needs of the patient and family

  • Ability to ensure the confidentiality and rights of all patient and departmental documents is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: The ability to read, analyze, and interpret physician's orders and other written communication methods of the health care team is essential.

Ability to respond to customer inquiries or to those of other members of the health care team must be present. The incumbent must demonstrate an ability to read and interpret age-specific data regarding patient conditions. He/she must demonstrate spoken English ability to communicate patient and family education in an age appropriate context.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts in the preparation of medications, intravenous drips and other therapeutic interventions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS: Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland within 90 days of graduation from an accredited school of nursing and a current BCLS certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Will work in a clean, well-lighted environment.

The job requires pushing and pulling and lifting of equipment weighing in excess of 35 pounds up to 40% of the time. Requires lifting and positioning of patients, weighing up to 300 pounds, with the assistance of other staff members, up to 60% of the time. The position requires walking and standing 60% of the time, and requires caring supplies and other items.

Below Expectations (BE) Performance is below minimum acceptable standards and expectations. Improvement is needed and expected.

Performance at this level may cause the department and /or co-workers some problems or inconveniences - or tends to diminish the department's effectiveness and/or productivity. A Performance Improvement Action Plan (PIAP) must accompany BE ratings; employee is not eligible for a performance increase until the PIAP has been successfully accomplished.

Meets Expectations (ME) Performance meets standards and expectations.

Exceeds Expectations (EE) Performance always meets and often exceeds standards and expectations. Performance is characterized by notable skill, speed, accuracy, increased workload, or superior job knowledge. The individual contributes to improvements/changes in the department or work area.

Demonstrates Leadership (DL) Performance consistently exceeds expectations. Performance is characterized by significant initiative which involves not only suggesting changes but helping to research, implement, lead a taskforce, train others, prepare procedural manuals, flow-chart troublesome processes, develop a new procedure/process, etc.

Employee may inspire, motivate, and lead others to go beyond expectations. Work has a significant positive impact on the work area, department, or organization. Written justification is required for DL ratings.
