Program Details:

The HCA Nurse Residency Program will provide education, support and guidance to new graduate nurses as they begin their careers in HCA Healthcare hospitals. It is a yearlong, extensive clinical orientation (StaRN) and professional development curriculum for new graduate nurses that culminates in an evidence-based capstone project.

StaRN (12 -17 weeks):

Specialty Training Apprenticeship for Registered Nurses

The StaRN Program is primarily designed to provide the graduate nurse with the tools necessary to succeed in today's hospital environment.

StaRN will assist the graduate nurse with the transition out of the classroom setting onto the unit by providing the following training:

  • Didactic training: introduces nurses to core curriculum and hospital initiatives in a classroom setting

  • Simulation training: reinforces nursing skills learned in a didactic setting

  • Hands on training: 5-8 weeks with a facility preceptor in a nursing unit

Certifications achieved all tracks:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) Dysrhythmia Interpretation

  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification

  • Meditech Modules

Additional training and certifications for Emergency Nurses:

  • ENA Modules
  • ENPC 2 day course
  • TNCC 2 day course

The schedule during the first portion of the StaRN is Monday through Friday, 8-hours a day, 40 hours a week. The preceptorship portion of the program consists of three 12-hour shifts at the hospital. Attendance is mandatory for the entire program.

Program acceptance requires a minimum two (2) year, full time commitment to the hospital.

Professional Development Program (remaining 9 months):

  • Paired with a trained mentor for integration and socialization into the culture of professional nursing

  • Monthly resident seminars following a core curriculum for professional development

  • Completion of an evidence-based poster presentation

  • Obtain Charge Nurse and Preceptor skills

Current FL RN license required or appropriate compact licensure. If compact license held, active FL RN license required within 90 days of hire.

The Star Tech program is a unique educational opportunity designed to meet the crucial needs for certified nursing assistants. The paid 4-week program combines classroom interactive lectures, skills and electronic health record training, and practice and hands-on clinical training done at the hiring facility. Upon completion, the licensed certified nursing assistants are equipped with the knowledge and skillset typically found in a more experienced certified nursing assistant. The Star Tech Program is designed for certified nursing assistants to work on Medical Surgical Nursing Units. What is the program comprised of? The program is comprised of a combination of didactic and skills training, as well as clinical preceptorship at the sponsoring facility. Star Tech is concentrated training prior to hospital employment. The licensed certified nursing assistant is not only oriented to the facility in which he or she will be working, but is better prepared for standard patient care assignments in an acute care setting upon successful completion of the 4-week program. What is the program content? The Star Tech program is based upon the standards established by the State Boards of Nursing for CNA's. Many of the division and/or facility specific training initiatives will be incorporated into the curriculum as well. Learners will be BLS and CPI certified. Nursing assistants will also be introduced and trained on the facility Electronic Health Record. How long does the program last? The program is a 4 week program, including the clinical preceptorship. The first two weeks include a combination of didactic education and skills training. The remaining two weeks are spent at the sponsoring facility working with a hospital RN Preceptor and "Certified Nursing Assistant Buddy." What is expected of the learner during the Star Tech program? All nursing assistants are required to be present and on-time for EVERY day of class, skills practice, and preceptorship. There is a significant amount of instruction provided each day, and there is no opportunity to "make up" days. All nursing assistants are expected to come to class prepared, dressed appropriately, and with a professional, engaged, and courteous attitude at all times.
