What does a chemical process engineer do?

A process engineer can have many different responsibilitiesdepending on the group they work in. Broadly speaking, a process engineer usesengineering tools to define, measure, analyze, improve, and control a chemicalprocess. Process engineers can directly see how their work impacts the successof a company.

The types of problems a process engineer typically works onincludes:

  • Developing ways to improve raw material yields

  • Implementing energy efficiency improvements ina chemical process

  • Analyzing and evaluating economical ways todebottleneck a process

  • Observing a chemical operation and analyzingdata to recommend improvements

  • Developing or improving operating procedures toachieve improvements

  • Performing equipment design and sizingcalculations for new chemical processing equipment

  • Scaling up a process from a lab, bench, orpilot scale to a commercialized scale

  • Analyzing process hazards and then implementingsolutions to mitigate those hazards

VIEW JOBS 11/8/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-02-06T00:00 AdvanSix is seeking an experienced Lead Chemical Process Engineer, based at their Chesterfield, VA location to work interactively with the business, R&D and plant groups, to identify improvements and expansions to our existing product line as well as developing new products and processes that will sustain and grow our business. The incumbent will ensure that AdvanSix's Process Engineering Standards and Procedures are met during the development, design, and construction phases, and will work to improve these processes in parallel. The lead process engineer will also provide process technology and production engineering support to operating plants. Position Responsibilities: Provides senior level engineering and process support to assigned manufacturing area by identifying, initiating, and leading process improvement and product quality projects. * Lead the development of Front End and Process Design Packages for the AdvanSix Nylons Solutions including: * Process Description and key technology and risk summary * Proper scaling up of laboratory data to commercial design * Process Simulations * Heat and Material Balance and Process Flow Diagrams * Piping & Instrument Diagrams * Process Equipment Specifications * Leading Process Hazard Analysis/HAZOP activities * Supporting capital project engineers during the detailed design phase, equipment purchase, construction and start up * Become an expert on the process chemistry, the operating philosophy and the process design basis for the equipment * Responsible for insuring that the PFD's and P&ID's are accurate and kept up to date * Work within teams to identify and implement longer term process improvement efforts, with the overall goal being to achieve improved safety, higher yields, better production rates, and higher attainment * Identify and implement improvements on basic control schemes and advanced process control strategies * Develop process economic studies * Quality assurance of engineering calculations, including process simulation input and output data * Lead PHA activities for new projects and existing operations. * Responsible for driving productivity and efficiency improvements throughout the plant. * Champions Six Sigma Plus initiatives and teams through to completion to support plant goals. * Provides strategic input in developing and implementing AOP initiatives and provides input into the site Strategic Plan (STRAP), Annual Operating Plan (AOP) and capital budget. * Provides coaching, mentoring and skill development to other site engineers. * Responsible for improving the baseline value of key area metrics toward entitlement values (or beyond entitlement values where possible) through contributions to high-impact Six Sigma teams. * Responsible for developing and managing computer-based process models. * Provides support for long term process stability efforts, new product evaluations, and operations improvement activities as needed Basic Candidate Qualifications: * Minimum of seven (7) years engineering / technical experience in manufacturing. * Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or related field Additional Candidate Qualifications: * Preferred 10-15+ years of chemical industry experience * Experience in developing and leading process improvement teams through resources outside span of control. * Proven leadership skills including influencing others, fostering teamwork, motivating others, and coaching others to improve their skills * Demonstrated technical/analytical/leadership skills necessary to successfully execute improvement efforts. * Six Sigma trained (Green Belt certification required; Black Belt certification a plus.) * Strong project management skills required. * Ability to manage multiple / varied assignments simultaneously. * Proven understanding of Statistical Process Control and Statistical Quality Control methodologies * Strong analytical problem-solving skills * Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment desired * Strong interplay of engineering technology and business acumen to bring value to Business sought. * Ability to analyze complex technical issues and develop engineering solutions preferred. * Experience in design of new chemical facilities preferred * Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
