Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a producer to join our New Formats team within the newsroom's Strategy unit. You will experiment with story forms, including those created for email, text messaging, calendars, slide decks, e-books and proprietary formats on our platforms, carry out original reporting and curation on a wide range of topics, and partner with other Journal reporters and coverage teams to unlock opportunities to provide value to our growing audiences.

You should be well-versed in the news of the day; have a knack for conversational, concise writing; be organized and data literate, with a sense for the topics that interest the Journal's audiences, current and future. Assignments could range from creating a series of visually appealing and data-rich slide decks, to curating a seasonal collection of stories, to curating a calendar of good reads, to gathering string for an e-book. We value collaboration and creativity, and are focused on leaving our audiences smarter and smiling.

It's essential to have an enthusiasm for news and the public mission of journalism. The Journal is the most trusted news outlet in the country, and is expanding its appeal among new audiences. Solid reporting experience, story judgment and journalism ethics are a must. Beyond that, we'd like people who are excited to think about content differently, moving away from simply viewing things as news stories that are tied to particular days and instead toward content that is purposefully useful to our audience and longer-lasting.

The position will be based in our New York City office and report to the New Formats Editor.

You Will:

  • Conceive of new ways to curate, research, write and package existing news and archival content

  • Develop style guides, best-practices and a voice for various formats, including calendar entries, text messaging, slide decks and on-platform tools

  • Pitch and/or produce New Formats projects ranging from e-books to slide decks, in partnership with newsroom teams

  • Collaborate closely with the New Formats visuals producer to develop prototypes for testing and implementation across the newsroom

  • Monitor and share performance data for New Formats tools

  • Incubate and launch unique and habit-forming experiences that use compelling stories, standing features and elements of audience interaction across formats

  • Work closely with the audience, strategy and off-platform teams to build an audience and find opportunities to bring our journalism to new readers

You Have:

  • Superb news judgment; a strong journalistic foundation as a reporter or editor

  • A passion for experimentation and a facility for data

  • The ability to move projects forward in a collaborative team environment

  • Thrives in an atmosphere of change

  • Open-minded. Welcomes learning new skills and opportunities to teach others

  • LI-JA1-WSJ
