Position Summary: As a Design Engineer at New Flyer, you will play a pivotal role in transitioning one of our diesel bus platforms to an electric vehicle (EV) platform and it's subsequent challenges throughout it's development. You will be expected to lead design tasks and projects, ensuring alignment with customer requirements and manufacturing capabilities. Your work will be instrumental in understanding the limitations, modifications, and transition from one powertrain/energy system to another.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate customer requirements into detailed design specifications for bus platform electrification, ensuring alignment with engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

  • Create comprehensive engineering designs and drawings that adhere to customer specifications and manufacturing constraints, leveraging your expertise in mechanical or electrical engineering principles.

  • Conduct design reviews and participate in design validation activities to ensure design integrity and manufacturability, identifying and addressing potential issues early in the design process.

  • Conduct thorough engineering calculations and analysis to verify design compliance with established criteria and regulatory standards, ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of our bus systems.

  • Utilize CAD software to develop comprehensive 3D models and engineering drawings for various bus components and systems, adhering to design standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Collaborate with customers and internal stakeholders in pre-production meetings, actively contributing engineering insights and addressing design-related inquiries or concerns.

  • Execute controlled testing of components and installations, meticulously verifying product reliability, functionality, and fitment to contractual requirements.

  • Prepare detailed design documentation including technical specifications, design reports, and bill of materials, ensuring accuracy and completeness.

  • Provide valuable engineering support to production, quality assurance, customer service, and other departments, offering technical expertise and guidance as needed. Ensure accuracy and integrity of engineering documents, instructions, and shop floor materials.

  • Provide design support during the manufacturing and assembly process, collaborating with production teams to resolve design-related issues and implement design changes as needed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success and efficiency of the engineering team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma, or equivalent.

  • 2-4 years of experience in product design or engineering roles within the automotive or transportation industry, preferably with a focus on buses or commercial vehicles.

  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA) and other design tools, with a strong emphasis on 3D modeling and drafting.

  • Solid understanding of engineering principles and design fundamentals, with the ability to apply theoretical concepts to real-world design challenges.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and external partners.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with a proactive and solutions-oriented mindset.

  • Passion for innovation and continuous improvement, with a drive to push the boundaries of transit bus design and technology.

  • Preferred but not required: Registered Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
