DESCRIPTION

The Department of Neurosciences is a large department within the UCSD School of Medicine. The Department's mission is to create the synergies and define the ideas and programs that will allow us to transform the way our neurosciences community discovers, teaches and cares. We strive to conduct cutting-edge science and research and train the next generation of neurologists and researchers by fostering education at all levels and integrating the latest scientific and medical advances into the curriculum.

The Neuroimmunology Research Program pursues translational and clinical studies to advance understanding and improve the treatment of disorders such as multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, optic neuritis, and other central nervous system autoimmune diseases. From biomarker and genetic studies to clinical trials, the program offers exciting opportunities to participate in patient-oriented research.

Under supervision, the incumbent will serve as an Asst. Staff Research Associate for multiple research protocols in the Department of Neurology.

Assist with administrative duties on several projects. Recruit and schedule patient appointments. Assist with conducting recruitment interviews and consent participants into studies.

Provide assistance for and have direct communication with patients and families. Assist in collecting demographic information. Maintain and update patient and research databases.

Participate in lab activities as required, including but not limited to transport of lab samples; assist with ordering/maintaining supplies and equipment; performing telephone screens; equipment and source documents for patient visits; filing; data entry, and other similar jobs. Assist with maintaining consent forms and other IRB-related matters.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of biology neurobiology, healthcare or related field, generally acquired through a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Working knowledge of human subjects research policies and procedures.

  • Working knowledge of research protocols in order to screen patients for eligibility, initiate treatment plan, collect specimens, and orient participating physicians. Must be able to maintain confidentiality.

  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures and values. Demonstrated ability to interpret procedures to determine patient eligibility and potential toxicities.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, database management and email skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with the ability to work in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community with staff, faculty and students. Participate and contribute to discussions regarding procedures and goals of department.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interaction with a diverse population.

  • Ability to multi task, and work with others to achieve common goals.

  • Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments, maintain workflow, and work productively in meeting critical deadlines and milestones.

  • Excellent clerical, record keeping, and data management skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with regulatory documents needed for the conduct of clinical trials.

  • Certification as a clinical research associate or coordinator.

  • Possess a Limited Phlebotomy Certification or higher (i.e. Phlebotomy or Venipuncture Certification).

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must have access to reliable transportation and/or valid California driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 - $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $25.75 - $30.72

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
