SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: To perform electroencephalographs (EEG), evoked potentials (EP), neurotelemetry, video/EEG monitoring, ambulatory monitoring, routine topographic brain mapping studies, multiple sleep latency test (MSLT), in the laboratory and at the bedside of patients.
Scope: Neurodiagnostic Techs work to gather excellent data to assist physicians in prevention; assessment; diagnosis; and treatment of patients with epilepsy; seizure-like events; and neuro-critical conditions by performing electroencephalographs and other specialized neurodiagnostic studies.
A Neurodiagnostic Tech is capable of applying education and skill to complete core functions of the job. Strong; well-developed communication skills and knowledge of EEG are essential for this position.
REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
Possesses the ability to independently and accurately perform a full spectrum of neurotelemetry, including all routine studies such as electroencephalography (EEG), long term EEG monitoring (LTME, ICU/cEEG), seizure first aid, ambulatory EEG application and monitoring, in various hospital settings, including at the bedside of patients in intensive care units.� Ability to provide seizure first aid and acuity testing.�
Performs assigned neurodiagnostic testing procedures. Maintains currency in field through continued education such as participation in credentialed courses and attending seminars.
Implements personal EEG knowledge into the laboratory by way of training other technicians, improving workflow techniques and assisting in the supervision of lab function. Understands and practices appropriate emergency-response actions and always ensures patient safety. Maintains knowledge of and adheres to basic infection control standards relating to patient and equipment.
Maintains knowledge of appropriate monitoring display settings and can adjust accordingly. Can operate independently, utilize resources, and efficiently produces quality work. Participates in education and meetings as designated by department leadership.
Strong ability to think critically in stressful environments. Training of new staff is within the scope of this position. Other duties as assigned.�
Keeps equipment clean and in proper working order. Troubleshoots equipment problems, makes repairs or reports issues to leadership promptly.
Maintains necessary supplies and equipment. Ensures that work areas are organized and present a safe, accessible, effective and efficient environment for employees, patients, and families.�
Measures, marks and accurately applies, and removes electrodes in a responsible, efficient and caring manner, according to the international 10-20 system. Ensures that electrode impedances meet laboratory standards.
Writes a comprehensive patient history. Explains test procedure to patient and family members. Possesses the ability to independently perform routine, ICU and LTME studies on all patient populations including neonates, critical care patients, and patients with behavior difficulties, according to the laboratory's standards.
Accurately and tactfully performs electrocerebral inactivity (ECI) studies. Understands EEG, recognizes and notates pertinent signal changes, and reports on any significant electrographic and/or electroclinical event.�
Accurately enter patient information into database. Can navigate Epic and utilizes appropriate data. Reviews EEG records to ensure appropriate documentation.� Clips, prunes and archives EEG data according to department standard.�
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent. Associates in Electroneurodiagnostic Technology (END) or other related field.
Must obtain BLS Certification within 1 month of hire and maintain BLS Certification.
