Position Summary Information

Position Purpose

This position will be responsible for all aspects of installation, maintenance and operation of server and networked computer lab infrastructure for the Department of Mathematics and Digital Sciences in the College of Science and Technology. This includes monitoring the stability, security and correct operation of servers and network storage, web servers, database servers, directory services, computer labs and third party application systems. The position will be required to provide support, problem determination and correction to end users and other technical staff as necessary. Other duties will include installation and maintenance of third party application systems, performing and maintaining system backups, planning and performing system recoveries or disaster recoveries as necessary and understanding digital forensics applications and specialized needs. Performing capacity planning and system life cycles is required. The position requires writing the necessary scripts or programs to automate tasks as necessary. This position will require a high level of interaction and communication with Faculty, Staff and Students in order to understand and provide any special problem solutions needed in a diverse higher education environment.

Description of Duties

  • Administer and Support Server Virtualization systems.

  • Administer Database Servers

  • Install specialized application systems.

  • Administer Windows and Linux Web Servers.

  • Administer Windows and Linux DHCP and DNS servers.

  • Administer Storage Area Network Hardware and Software.

  • Monitor and maintain all aspects of security for assigned systems.

  • Administer Network and Server monitoring systems.

  • Administer and Support local Virtualization systems.

Decision Making

  • Will be required to prioritize various problems in a fast-paced environment.

  • Will have to decide on courses of actions that will affect the availability of systems used by all faculty, staff and students.

  • Will need to ensure systems are ready and available to students at all times.

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Will provide specifications and recommendations for server, hardware and software systems and services. This includes hardware for computer labs, network and routing devices.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Will supervise student workers as needed to accomplish tasks.

Minimum Requirements Profile

One year of experience as a Network Specialist 1

OR

Two years of information technology experience that includes one year of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance, and an associate's degree in any information technology field

OR

Four years of information technology experience that includes one year of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance

OR

An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes one year of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or closely related field.

OR

Two years as a Network Specialist 1, Information Technology Generalist 1, Applications Developer 1, or Distributed Systems Specialist 1.

OR

Three (3) years of information technology experience that includes two years of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance and an associate degree in any information technology field.

OR

Five (5) years of information technology experience that includes two years of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance.

OR

An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 24 credits in computer science

  • It is preferred that the years of the required experience must have been obtained within the last five years.
