Title: Network Operations Technician I

Department: IS Operations

Shift: Days

Status: Non-Exempt

Hours: 40 hours

Shift Length: 10 hours

Location: UMass Memorial Health Care

  • 100 Front St, Worcester, MA.

Schedule is rotating, working every other weekend (Fri-Sun). Holiday work is expected as team is 24/7/365. Shifts are 7 am

  • 5:30 pm.

Position Summary:

Responsible for detecting, analyzing, documenting, and coordinating timely response to infrastructure service issues

  • 24x7x365. These service issues are relayed through various means, and relate to servers, network connectivity and storage thresholds. Responsible for seeing the full resolution of trouble tickets and ensuring that they are completed in a timely manner.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Fields inbound trouble tickets from clients and uses remote monitoring and diagnosis tools to identify, troubleshoot and resolve server/network issues.

  • Proactively monitor server/network environment using management tools (ex. Nagios/VROPS/AKIPS/NetMRI).

  • Responds to alerts and alarms for backup, disk space, services, memory, CPU utilization according to Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Analyzes server hardware, operating system and network connectivity issues and communicates clearly within IS, and with clients.

  • Coordinates Server/Network repairs and assists vendors/analysts with testing of repairs.

Position Qualifications License/Certification/Education:

Required: Associates degree in technical or related field.

Preferred: Bachelor's degree of Science in technical field.

Experience/Skills Required:

  • A minimum of one to three years of experience in a technical capacity.

  • Must have strong skills in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and problem resolution.

  • Must have excellent analytical, communication, and customer interfacing skills, as well as a good working knowledge of IP, including IP network architecture, routing protocols, peering and DNS.

  • Must have knowledge of core network architecture, wireless device operation, switching and routing concepts, firewalls and active traffic management techniques and tools including NATing, caching and compression and basic network security background including SSL and IPSEC.

  • Basic knowledge of network hardware, TCP/IP, routing, network security and telecommunication circuits.

  • Must have experience with Structured Cabling and Network Wiring.

  • Must be self-motivated with the ambition to problem-solve, learn and create one's own mechanisms for resolving issues and most importantly, communicate effectively with the ability to work in a team environment. Must be able to work independently.

  • This position requires regular and recurring shift work. Must be willing and available to work rotating shifts. Must be able to travel from site to site as needed.


  • Minimum of one year of professional network experience.

  • Working knowledge of Layer 1 optical transport networks and equipment and expertise.

  • Experience in systems administration.

The Service Desk Technician I is the frontline technical support professional who receives and handles tickets. Responsible for providing customers with information, restoring service, and escalating tickets to a higher level of support. These individuals are technical generalists. This position requires good communication skills and the ability to take direction regarding incident resolution. Must have working knowledge of IT systems, processes, and terminology. This position is based out of our Corporate Office in Worcester, MA. This position is Full-time, 40 hours. Schedule is Monday-Friday. Start times may begin as early as 8:00 AM. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Evaluate documented resolutions and analyze trends for ways to prevent future problems. * Alert management to emerging trends in incidents. * Assist in software releases and rollouts and communication to the end users. * Field incoming requests to the Service Desk via both telephone and e-mail to ensure courteous, timely and effective resolution of end user issues. * Document all pertinent end user identification information, including name, department, contact information and nature of problem or issue. * Build rapport and elicit problem details from service desk customers. * Prioritize and schedule problems. Escalate problem (when required) to the appropriately experienced technician. * Record, track and document the service desk incident management process, including all successful and unsuccessful decisions made, and actions taken, through to final resolution. * Apply diagnostic utilities to aid in troubleshooting. * Access software updates, drivers, knowledge bases, and FAQ resources on the Internet/Intranet to aid in problem resolution. * Identify and learn appropriate software and hardware used and supported by the organization. * Perform hands-on fixes at the desktop level, including installing and upgrading software, installing hardware, implementing file backups, and configuring systems and applications. * Perform preventative maintenance, including checking and cleaning of workstations, printers, and peripherals. * Test fixes to ensure problem has been adequately resolved. * Perform post-resolution follow ups to help requests. * Develop help sheets and FAQ lists for end users. * Reinforce SLAs to manage end-user expectations. * Must participate in mandatory on-call rotation. * Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: * Associate degree or 1 to 2 years equivalent work experience. * Optional Certifications: HDI, Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or ITIL v3.0 or v4.0.
