The Network Engineer is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the campus network, including installation, configuration, documentation, service records, troubleshooting, routine preventive measures, security, and stability. This position is part of a team supporting both wired and wireless networks on the main campus and CMU's remote locations. This position is a primary resource for technical support and maintenance concerns; ensures that the network and related procedures adhere to organizational goals, values, and standards; and promotes excellent teamwork and communications with all team members.

Required Qualifications

Network Engineer I:

Associates degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience that equates to two years.

IT experience related to the installation, configuration, modification, and support of networked systems.

Demonstrated ability to maintain meaningful preventive maintenance schedules.

Familiarity of networking capabilities of various operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, etc.

Working knowledge of the latest wireless technologies.

Knowledge of routing protocols (OSPF, RIP, BGP, etc.).

Understanding of WAN technologies.

Demonstrated ability to apply exceptional troubleshooting and communication skills, as well as the ability to interact successfully with the end user.

Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and project a positive attitude.

Willing to be on call.

Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Network Engineer II:

All the qualifications of Network Engineer I, plus:

Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science or Information Systems, or equivalent education and experience.

Three years of relevant IT experience related to the installation, configuration, modification, and support of networked systems.

Ability to partner with cross-functional teams to drive communications that minimize redundancy and promote effective standardization.

Experience with administration of one or more of low-complexity applications, such as IPAM, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, etc.

Experience with administration of one or more of high-complexity enterprise networked systems, such as wireless, firewalls, network access control, application delivery controllers, or having a large organizational impact.

Experience in administering networked systems in a high-availability configuration.

Ability to work with user offices and subject matter experts in creating solutions using core supported systems.

Experience with identifying and mitigating information security risks for the network.

Ability to gather and analyze user needs and create specifications to meet user requirements.

Ability to participate in cross-functional teams to solve complex business or systems issues.

Ability to recommend and implement changes in development, maintenance and overall system standards.

Experience with scripting/programming to automate network tasks.

Network Engineer III:

All the qualifications of Network Engineer II, plus:

Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science or Information Systems, or equivalent education and experience.

Five years of relevant IT experience related to the installation, configuration, modification, and support of networked systems.

Ability to assist with planning and strategy development around a service and its related systems.

Develops consistent and timely documentation.

Demonstrated initiative and the ability to establish priorities, show initiative in day-to-day activities, solve problems appropriately and work efficiently.

Experience with administration of two or more high-complex networked systems, such as wireless, network access control, application delivery controllers, or having a large organizational impact.

Advanced experience or knowledge in one or more scripting languages such as Ansible.

Seeks out opportunities for improvements and develops realistic proposals for implementation.

Consistently solicits input when making decisions or solving problems.

Consistent professionalism in working with faculty, staff, and students.

Efficient and expedient resolution of incidents and service requests.

Duties & Responsibilities

Network Engineer I:

Responsible for installation maintenance and troubleshooting of network devices, such as switches and routers.

Manages the implementation of IT security procedures.

Utilizes software and hardware diagnostic tools to identify, diagnose and repair complex problems and factors effecting network performance and stability.

Maintains documentation regarding network configuration, operating procedures, and service records relating to network hardware and software.

Supports students and staff on wired and wireless networks.

Network Engineer II:

All responsibilities of the Network Engineer I, plus:

Acts as internal and external consultant providing technical guidance in complex projects.

Analyzes present systems and procedures, recommends changes or improvements.

Defines requirement for improving or replacing systems.

Guides system development and implementation, sometimes acting as project manager.

Defines policy requirements for firewalls/router access control lists.

Performs related networking tasks, or assigns to appropriate staff.

Works with users in developing project requirements.

Organizes and prepares new/modified system proposal reports.

Develops ancillary technical manuals and documentation as appropriate.

Recommends best network/system/solutions for the job.

Develops automation of network systems.

Works closely with other college and departmental technicians and collaborating with other IT staff.

Network Engineer III:

All responsibilities of the Network Engineer II, plus:

Participates with faculty in research and instructional problem solving.

Teaches courses as needed either internally or externally on subjects within his/her area of expertise.

May be responsible for advising administrative supervisor of needs regarding repair facilities and equipment available, of needs regarding the altering of preventive maintenance schedules, and of needs regarding repair maintenance problems in general.

Participates in long and short-range technology planning.
