Job Summary:

The Network Engineer position overseas all network engineering as well as supervision of staff relating to all IT WAN/LAN, wireless, voice and firewall systems for the university.  Responsible for managing the training and oversight of network administrators or analysts and the corresponding processes and approvals for recurring daily network operations.

Additional responsibilities includes managing ongoing network related IT vendors and contractor relationships. Planning, researching and implementing major upgrades, new technologies and project requirements for new facilities and renovations. Managing, improving, facilitating and approving requests for changes, communication workflows and coordination requests from various other HPU departments.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience as a network engineer or architect. (1 year)

  • Experience in general network administration. (3 years)

  • Experience managing Wireless Technology. (2 years)

  • Experience managing VOIP systems. (2 years)

  • Strong Knowledge of Aruba or Cisco switches, Fortigate Firewalls, or equivalent vendor equipment.

  • Strong Knowledge of IP networks, routing protocols, and high level services and security on network equipment.

  • Knowledgeable in basic computer operating systems and hardware.

  • Able to work all shifts and extended hours.

  • Must have reliable transportation to all HPU worksites.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certification or professional training in networks, support, architecture, and security, preferably in Cisco, or Aruba technologies. Knowledge in routing, spanning tree and L3 switching.

  • Knowledge in Teams VOIP systems.   Knowledge in Dell N-Series/S-Series or Aruba network equipment.

  • Knowledge of advanced network functions related to high availability, segmentation or security such as SD-WAN, SDN, hybrid cloud.

  • Knowledge realted to power distribution, load planning and redundancy for datacenters.

  • Ability to coordinate several projects.   Ability to adhere to established deadlines. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Experience managing external vendor contracts and relationships.

  • Experience taking leadership role and managing staff members.

Other Qualifications:

  • Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU's winter break, if necessary.

  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.

  • Able to work all shifts and extended hours.

  • This position may also require driving responsibility for an HPU vehicle.

  • Upon hire, candidate must have reliable personal transportation to facilitate travel between to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position.  This includes a valid driver's license and a personal vehicle that is legally registered and insured.

  • Due to driving responsibilities, you must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with HPU's Vehicle Driving policy.

  • Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilize excellent time and stress management skills.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:

  • Management and Planning (45%)

  • Manage telecommunications billing and accounting for all of the university networks

  • Perform information and network security audit and compliance checks

  • Proactive recommendations on enhancements to services and network resilience.

  • Planning and architecting new expansions projects and major upgrades/transitions.

  • Supervise, train and coordinate work of Network Administrators/Analysts.

  • Establish and enforce configuration and documentation standards for network devices.

  • Establish, monitor and suggest changes to new and existing vendor contracts and relationships.

  • Assist with annual and ongoing budget planning and long-term budget projections.

  • Monitor and review service request queues, solicit feedback from users and departments.

  • Network Administration (35%)

  • Primary responsibility for all administration of the various network, wireless, routing, firewall and phone systems within the University.

  • Configure, evaluate and test new network, firewall and VOIP equipment.

  • Schedule and supervise pro-active maintenance and minor upgrades for network equipment.

  • Establish, manage and monitor network related logs and alerts.

  • Process network related service requests for users and departments.

  • Learn and test emerging technologies and validate them against the HPU ecosystem.

  • Network Quality Improvements and Troubleshooting (15%)

  • Identify various hardware/software problems, and take appropriate actions to correct problems, or refer problems to other qualified personnel with a detailed explanation of symptoms and attempted remedies.

  • Maximize performance through improving HPU monitoring systems, optimize collaboration with network administrators and other IT Staff.

  • Perform testing and assessments of both core network infrastructure and end user experience to identify areas for improvements.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned (5%)

  • Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
