Job Summary

Functions as a technical specialist. With minimal oversight, develops and applies advanced engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to unique engineering problems. May supervise engineering staff on projects of medium to high complexity, or serve as a technical specialist providing knowledge and expertise.

Key Responsibilities

This Network Engineer will be responsible for both Information technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) network design and implementation for Smart Grid utility clients. May offer technical advisory and consulting services to the client. Provides Subject Matter Expert (SME) support to business development and pursuit activities, including assisting in the creation of proposal, scope, level of effort estimation and implementation plans. Leads and participates in project execution and technical delivery.

Key duties include:

  • Communicating directly with clients (sometimes non-technical clients) to identify current and future communication needs

  • Translating business requirements to technical network design specifications for implementation

  • Collaborate with and/or delegate responsibilities to a team of engineers

  • Assesses industry standards for models, and where appropriate, incorporates them into our network design best practices

  • Participates as technical lead on major projects and application roll-outs

  • Responsible for developing and adhering to all engineering/quality processes and procedures

  • Work hand-in-hand with project management on technical issues

  • Develops and manages scope, schedule and budget requirements

  • Leads production teams and may coordinating multiple discipline activity

  • Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts

  • Strong on documentation and processes

  • Validates work of lower level network engineers

  • Capable of optimizing day-to-day operational stability with the continual need to improve the service and deploy new services, processes and technologies

  • Create or expand utility communication systems

  • Understands, advocates, and supports IT and OT strategies

  • Mentors others on the network services team

  • Is externally recognized in industry as an expert that enhances the Company brand

Management Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

Typically, a minimum of 5 years network related work experience. Utility experience preferred.

  • Intermediate knowledge of construction & constructability practices & principles

  • Intermediate knowledge of process, procedures for project controls and estimating

  • Specific product knowledge and hands-on configuration experience on Nokia and Ciena OTN/DWDM/IP-MPLS is required.

  • Experience with configuring RF/WiMax/Microwave radio equipment is desirable

  • Cyber Security knowledge and experience is also desirable.

VIEW JOBS 2/7/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-05-08T00:00 This position is in Frontier's IP Network Activation team. The team is responsible for the test and turn-up of Frontier's National IP Network. This position will perform all duties that are necessary to provision circuits, network elements, and project coordination to implement and provision WAN and LAN technologies. Strong backgrounds in routing, switching, and MPLS are essential. Functions: * Track and complete network wide upgrades * Test and turn-up new hardware/software * Test and turn-up new network circuits (GigE, 10GigE, LAG) * Test and turn-up new virtual circuits (Packet optical tunneling) * Work closely with network engineering to provide feedback on potential network designs and new applications * Responsible for completing off-hours maintenance when required Qualifications: * Minimum 2 years experience in data environment * Must be able to work flexible hours * Must be able to work in a team environment * Applicant must have extensive knowledge of and practical experience in the use of routing and switching protocols: MPLS, BGP, OSPF, QoS (Layer 2 & 3) * Applicant should have extensive experience in: IP Subnetting, Network Design, Ethernet switching, and DSL/FiOS technologies. * Applicant should have an understanding of Spanning Tree Protocol and LAN switching environments. * Applicant should have prior experience working in MetaSolve M6. * Written, oral and presentation skills are critical to the position. This position interacts with regional engineers, shared services and local field personnel daily. * Must be able to handle multiple tasks at one time. * Scripting/Programming skills are desired. * Some understanding of IPv6 would be beneficial. * Experience provisioning and/or troubleshooting Packet Optical technologies is a plus. (Coriant and Cienna) * Should have experience in provisioning and troubleshooting the following equipment: Cisco Routers (7200-12000 series), Juniper Routers (M, MX and E series), Ethernet/MPLS Switches (Cisco ASR9010, 3600, Alcatel-Lucent 7450, 7750), Packet Optical Transport (Coriant, Ciena).
