This selected individual will be part of an integrated team engaged in planning and implementing solutions in support of multiple geographically distributed systems in a complex network environment. He/she will plan, implement, and support system engineering requests to meet operational needs, as well as engineering, deploying, and maintaining capabilities that are new to the environment. The selected individual will be responsible for server/router/firewall configuration and security management of an environment that includes networking equipment from several different manufacturers, as well as Windows/Linux servers, databases, VMware and security hardware & software. The network includes local and geographically dispersed LAN enclaves connected by WAN links.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Developing network security requirements and policy and translating requirements into specific device configurations.

  • Providing network administration support for development, deployment, and problem identification and remediation of the enterprise network environment.

  • Providing enterprise LAN support, working closely with the IT service provider teams to ensure customer requirements are considered and supported by the evolving LAN/WAN architecture.

  • Planning and implementing IT enhancements and undertaking project work.

  • Identifying and correcting WAN hardware, software, and circuit problems.

  • Identifying and correcting hardware and software issues on servers, clients, and networks.

  • Providing in-depth analysis on existing network and server configurations and developing plans for system enhancements.

  • Examining system data and implementing enhancements to improve reliability and performance.

  • Planning and implementing IT enhancements and undertake project work, to include configuring servers, clients, storage devices, and network components.

  • Planning and managing system installs and upgrades for networks and servers (hardware and software).

  • Providing detailed analysis and trouble-shooting guidance for real-time system crisis.

  • Supporting system engineering requests to meet operational needs.

  • Proposing, designing, testing, and installing capabilities that are new to the environment.

  • Providing technical assistance to companion work groups in support of overlapping projects.

Job Description JOB SUMMARY Works for and under the general direction of the Manager- Network Engineering. Responsibilities include planning and designing the network infrastructure and enterprise network solutions; troubleshooting, installing, implementing and administering network systems and providing Tier III support. Also analyzes capacity issues and develops capacity planning models. Responsible for ensuring planned testing activities are executed and for developing network security guidelines. If assigned to Voice Specialty, will be responsible for planning and designing the Unified Communications infrastructure and enterprise voice solutions to include, troubleshooting, installing, implementing, and administering voice systems and providing Tier III support. Assesses voice systems performance to ensure that it meets present and future needs of the business and provides voice systems planning recommendations to management. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS All Specialties * Researches, designs and advocates new voice/data technologies, architectures, and products that will support business requirements for the enterprise. * Develops short and long term technology roadmaps. * Develops a standards-based design methodology across the infrastructure delivering solid, robust and resilient documented designs following best practices, addressing disaster recovery, full-test compliance cycles and ensure all as-build deployments meet design specifications. * Documents existing systems architecture and technology portfolio to ensure accuracy is maintained. * Identifies, tests, diagnoses, and resolves communications systems performance problems in a multi-technology environment. * Interacts with vendors to resolve communications equipment and network system issues. * Develops and tests business continuity plans for all critical network communication systems. * Designs technical solutions and coordinates system build activities for voice/data connectivity and configures related network routers, switches, voice gateways, thin clients, servers, and other equipment. * Analyzes network activity and network problems to discover and prevent systematic errors. Recommends network design changes/enhancements for improved systems availability and performance. * Interacts with business units in response to service requests; researches and gathers all necessary details to determine communications or network engineering functional requirements to meet project user's needs. * Works closely with management in developing procurement requirements and service contracts by providing technical support during contract bidding, negotiation, and award processes. * Follows established change control procedures to facilitate daily operations and processes for both hardware and software platforms, including the coordination of service and repair of equipment and systems. * Provides general systems administration training to the Network Operations team and creates operational run books. * Acts as Network Engineering Manager in the absence of the manager. * Performs other duties as assigned. Network * Provides system design, architecture, and Tier III support for a predominately Cisco environment that includes core route/switch, firewalls, security, and wireless. * Serves as subject matter expert in firewalls, traffic load balancing, remote access solutions, and broadband technologies. * Develops and maintains Enterprise system monitoring and management tools such as Solarwinds, Splunk, Wireshark, Cisco Ironport, Bluecat Proteus, Cisco ISE, and Aruba Clearpass. * Utilizes commercial enterprise-level tools and products to provide network services, including: firewalls, IPS/IDS, DNS, DHCP, web security, TACACS+, VPN and NAC. * Researches and implements Cisco SRND/SAFE and industry best practices. * Supports and maintains Linux/Unix and other open source software to include BIND and Nessus. * Works with network, server, storage virtualization, i.e. MDS switching infrastructure, VSAN, VRF, VPN, and VMWare vSphere. * Works with IOS, NX-OS, EIGRP, BGP, GRE and OSPF. DECISION MAKING * This position works under limited supervision. * This position serves as a technical lead, providing guidance and mentorship to staff. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS All Specialties * Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university. * Six years of relevant IT work experience. * Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License consistent with SAWS Driving Policy. Network Specilty * Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), or Wireless (CCNP Wireless), or Network Security (CCSP). PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Network Specialty * Master's Degree from an accredited college or university. * Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) Certification. * Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification. * Advanced scripting experience in Python, PERL, or Ruby.
