Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago (NHS) is a highly respected non-profit organization that helps clients buy, fix and keep their homes. NHS' theory of change is that sustainable homeownership leads to stronger neighborhoods and generational financial growth.
Homeownership vests residents in their neighborhoods, and encourages community involvement, reduction in crime, stability of schools, racial equity, and opportunities to better the lives of families of all backgrounds. We focus on low and moderate income residents in challenged neighborhoods of Chicago on the South and West sides. We provide homeownership education and counseling and financial-wellness classes to help people become homeowners.
We also provide loans and construction services to support clients through the often complicated rehab process. We administer down-payment assistance to help make purchasing a home possible and grants programs that help people repair their homes, while our redevelopment group works to create affordable homes. Our neighborhood strategy group works at the grass-roots level with community-based organizations to promote and sustain homeownership in target areas, address blight, and empower residents.
We partner with other housing and governmental organizations to shape policy and create programs to support Chicago-area residents.
We are seeking a talented, analytical, customer focused AmeriCorps Vista to help expand our capacity to analyze our new initiative, a Homeowners Toolkit, while continuing to improve on subsequent releases. In addition, you will support NHS as it co-hosts the NeighborWorks Community Leadership Institute in Chicago. This is a great opportunity to help our organization leverage this valuable toolkit while continuing to look at ways to improve it allowing us to move to the next level in the fight against involuntary displacement and focus on activities that do the most to strengthen neighborhoods and build the lives of those who live in them.
