WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Our work is meaningful. You'll be supporting an agency completing critical forestry work across the state. Oregon is proud of its forests, and our staff are proud of the work we accomplish to protect, manage, and promote forest stewardship.

As the Stewardship Forester you will Administer the Forest Resources Division Programs and the Protection from Fire Program within the Central Oregon District

  • John Day Unit. Some duties include:
  • Provide professional forestry advice to landowners and operators concerning forest management.

  • Coordinate field activities with other agencies and maintain certain district files and resource maps.

  • Administer the Forest Practices Act and fire laws.

  • Provide technical support in fire planning, fire investigation and act as fire overhead on in-district fires.

  • Share in administration and implementation of NRCS, FSA, Western States and numerous other agencies provided grant programs related to landowner needs for promoting best management practices that ensure continuous growing of forest tree species.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of experience in Forestry and/or a closely related natural resource program, AND a Bachelor's degree in Forestry in a closely related natural resource program, OR three additional years of related Forestry experience;

OR

One year of experience in Forestry and/or a closely related natural resource program, and a Master's degree in Forestry and/or a closely related natural resource program

OR a Doctorate degree Forestry and/or a closely related natural resource program

Note:

  • Will be required to take and pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the arduous level.

  • Driver's License Check

  • This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver's license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

DESIRED SKILLS

  • Knowledge of silviculture, reforestation, hydrology, forest soils, road location and maintenance, fire behavior, fire prevention, suppression techniques, chemical application techniques.

  • Knowledgeable of timber harvesting practices.

  • Experience with Forest Management planning.

  • Ability to organize, plan, and perform work safely and effectively with minimum supervision.

  • Must have interpersonal skills including ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with landowners, operators, contractors, other agencies, and the public.

  • Skill writing clear and concise reports that include recommendations and conclusions.
