Position Summary

The Music Therapist is responsible for the assessment and planning of therapeutic activity needs for all patients in designated units of MCWHLB and in other units where pediatric patients receive care. Reports to Clinical Operations Manager, Child Life Department.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

  • Assesses patients to identify psychosocial/developmental needs and implement music therapy interventions accordingly. Also assesses for the emotional well being, physical health, social functioning, communication abilities and cognitive skills through musical responses. Plans, supervises and modifies therapeutic and developmental group and bedside activities to support patients as they adjust to and cope with hospitalization.

  • Works in conjunction and/or collaboration with other members of the treatment team (ST, PT, OT, Child Life, Social Work, Nursing, etc.) to use music activities to help patients and sometimes their family members express feelings about the illness/disease, and to ensure continuum of care by providing opportunities to address patient goals within music therapy sessions.

  • Assists patients in identifying community resources for on-going music/art lessons should patients express interest in creative expression during hospitalization.

  • Ensures music supplies are purchased according to current policies and procedures and follows infection control standards.

  • Communicates with members of treatment team to ensure the highest level of care for patients and their families. Provides educational in-services to hospital staff members as necessary.

  • Coordinates special music events and music donations. Identifies and maintains relationships with community resources and possible funding sources.

  • Participates in department specific Performance Improvement/LEAN activities.

  • Maintains accurate documentation and statistics, and approves and co-signs intern chart notes.

  • Participates in training and supervising students, interns and volunteers.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for this role, including but not limited to, shift differentials, extra shift incentives, and bonus opportunities. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience:

  • 2 years of experience working with children of all ages in the field of music therapy. Collaboration and co-treat experience with other disciplines, i.e. social work, rehab therapies, and child life staff. Experience in a non-profit setting helpful.

Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • BA/BS degree required in Music Therapy. Successful completion of music therapy internship as required by CBMT and AMTA. Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Board Certification required. Maintenance of certification required.
