Job Description
Job Title: Secondary Orchestra Director
Location: Weston Public Schools, Weston, CT
Position Overview: Weston is seeking a passionate and dynamic Orchestra Director to lead and inspire our secondary strings students. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a deep understanding of music education, and the ability to foster a positive and inclusive learning environment. This full-time position involves directing high school and middle school ensembles, teaching string lessons and collaborating with other faculty members to provide comprehensive and enriching musical experiences for our students.
Key Responsibilities:
Direct and oversee all aspects of the secondary orchestra program in grades 7-12 and other specialty ensembles as needed.
Develop lessons and implement a comprehensive curriculum for stringed instrument instruction.
Plan and conduct rehearsals, ensuring that students are adequately prepared for performances, competitions, and other events.
Coordinate and present performances, including concerts, school events, community events, and competitions.
Collaborate with the K-12 music department to align instruction with departmental goals and music education across the curriculum.
Maintain an inventory of instruments, equipment, and music library, ensuring that all resources are in good working order and properly stored.
Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student engagement, creativity, and teamwork.
Provide individualized instruction and support to students to help them achieve their musical goals.
Communicate regularly with students, parents, and school administration regarding program goals, events, and student progress.
Attend faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and other school-related activities as required.
Stay current with developments in music education and implement best practices to enhance the quality of the band program.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Instrumental Music Performance, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
Valid Connecticut Teaching Certification in K-12 Music (049).
Proven experience in directing and teaching secondary string ensembles.
Strong knowledge of music theory, history, and pedagogy.
Excellent conducting and rehearsal techniques.
Ability to inspire and motivate students of varying skill levels and backgrounds.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, parents, and community members.
Commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with teaching music theory and AP Music Theory.
Previous experience in arranging music for various ensembles.
Participation in professional music organizations and continued professional development.
