This is an executive position (no union affiliation) and serves at the pleasure of the Mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage.

DEPARTMENT: Traffic

HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

LOCATION: 4700 Elmore Road

Example of Duties

Manage and oversee all operations and personnel of the Municipal Traffic Engineering Department as Municipal Traffic Engineer. Establish personnel needs, organizational structures, performance standards, and long-range programs. Responsible for work formulation and management; engineering design and layout; traffic safety studies; traffic impact analysis; Highway Safety Improvement Program; areawide signalization; traffic control design, placement and maintenance; on/off street parking design and regulations; street light design & designation; on-street pedestrian & bicycle facilities; weight restrictions; truck routes; and all related functions. Supervise and direct the design, placement, maintenance, inventory, and operations of traffic control devices. Oversee and implement studies to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and goods within State and Municipal rights-of-way. Administer Anchorage Municipal Code requirements affecting traffic engineering duties, and draft proposed amendments to enhance the code for efficient delivery of services. Implement pedestrian safety and congestion management plans. Work as a team member with internal Traffic Divisions and other municipal, state, and federal agencies, elected officials, private developers and the public to ensure timely and quality service. Oversee all related functions to the Municipal Traffic Engineer under AMC Title 9 and Title 21. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Bachelor's degree in Traffic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Land Use, or a related discipline, and eight (8) years of experience in traffic engineering or a related engineering field, one (1) year of which was in a supervisory position.

OR

Master's degree in Traffic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Land Use, or a related discipline, and six (6) years of experience in traffic engineering or a related engineering field, one (1) year of which was in a supervisory position.

Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver's license with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.

Must possess a State of Alaska registration as a Professional Civil Engineer within one (1) year of hire.
