GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Multilingual Learners Instructor-Newcomers works collaboratively with classroom teachers, school counseling staff, and specialist teachers to assist non-English speaking or limited English speaking students in developing spoken and written communication skills.
CLASSIFICATION: Fair Labor Standards Act Exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Support Services, Director of Instructional Support Services and Director of Curriculum and Instruction
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions in the current Master Agreement between the Colchester Education Association and the School Board. Evaluation will be completed according to the guidelines defined in the district's Differentiated Evaluation Process.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year are in accordance with the current Master Contract and salary schedule.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1.Current Vermont Teaching license as a Teacher of English as a Second Language.
2.Prior successful teaching experience.
3.Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem solving skills.
4.Flexibility and understanding in addressing multicultural issues, cultural norms, and a variety of languages.
5.Commitment to the district's mission and Strategic Plan.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Assess the functional literacy levels of all new ML or non-English speaking students, and develop appropriate instructional programs.
2.Communicate with classroom teachers, school counseling staff, and/or specialist teachers regarding current ML student needs and instructional plans.
3.Work with new ML students individually or in small groups, as appropriate.
4.Conduct activities which promote effective listening, speaking, reading, or writing skills.
5.Assist new ML students in learning content, according to their language readiness and developmental levels.
6.Provide activities and experiences to help students and their families adapt to our American culture.
7.Challenge students to master both basic and higher order thinking skills.
8.Prepare quarterly progress reports on new ML students; review with students, parents, teachers, and supervisor.
9.Coordinate programming and resources for new ML students with ML and classroom instruction.
10. Work with the CSD ML department to define and develop a system for the arrival and integration of ML newcomer students and their families across the district.
11. Perform other tasks as assigned by building principals and/or your direct supervisor.
