Multilingual Learner / English Language Learner Long-term Sub- Secondary Level

Qualifications

  • Valid Rhode Island Certification - English Speakers of other languages PK-12, ESL Teacher, Bilingual Teacher

  • Knowledge of RIDE high school reform and current educational practices

  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with students, parents, and staff

  • Alternatives to the above qualifications may be appropriate and acceptable

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

  • Provide direct instruction of English Language Development to identified EL students based on most recent data

  • Provide recommendations for programming and placement of ELs in the building

  • Collaborate with district level staff to continuously improve instruction for English Learners

  • Work in conjunction with supervisor to develop and deliver professional development to staff on best practices for educating ELs

  • Work with administration and teachers to consistently use effective teaching practices to incorporate the Language Standards into all content areas.

  • Work with the leadership team to ensure frequent monitoring and assessment of student learning

  • Be knowledgeable of current teaching methodologies, strategies and research for implementation of language development supports

  • Build an understanding of second language acquisition (i.e culturally responsive classroom, language development, classroom environment, instructional modifications, and best practices, etc.) for all educators working with ELs

  • Serve as a resource in identifying appropriate instructional strategies and interventions for English Learners as they acquire English and content knowledge

  • Provide assistance to colleagues in making the CCSS, Next Generation Science Standards, and CTE Standards accessible to ELs at their current grade levels

  • Build capacity of General Education, Technical, Special Education, and itinerant teachers to meet the language development needs of ELs

  • Participate in IEP meetings for English Learners, acting as EL liaison and team member to provide information and interpret data in relation to second language acquisition, time in program, educational history, and student demographics

  • Ensure all ELs receive appropriate EL accommodations for local and state assessments

  • Support state and local administration of assessments while adhering as closely as possible to daily schedule

  • Perform other duties assigned by the Supervisor of Student Supports and/or the Director
