Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY: The Multi-Modality Imaging Technologist is required to perform invasive and non-invasive procedures on a variety of patients. The Multi-Modality Imaging Technologist is required to utilize sterile techniques, if necessary, operate complex imaging equipment and assist physicians as necessary throughout the CHI St Vincent Health System. Continuing education, learned skills and experience will be utilized. This position will function without constant supervision to produce superior quality imaging studies. The Multi-Modality Technologist must routinely work within a minimum of two qualifying modalities as directed by department managers/supervisors to meet the specific needs of the departments and be licensed in all disciplines in which they perform exams. This includes Diagnostic Fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, and Ultrasound.

  • Patient Assessment:

Completes a comprehensive assessment on patients of all ages including patient screening and contraindications.

Obtains pertinent medical history from patient by observation or with oral communication.

Performs patient assessment to determine:

  • Patient's physical ability to undergo the imaging procedure as needed.

  • What patient care is needed during the procedure.

  • If there are contraindications to performing the procedure as ordered.

  • What modification of the procedure may be required by the age of the patient.

  • Documentation:

Utilizes patient clinical assessment and patient clinical history in making professional judgment that supports the plan of patient care and properly documents the patient assessment and clinical history.

Exercises professional judgment in performance of services and maintains a demeanor complimentary to medical ethics.

Capable of using EHR

Documents pertinent medical history from patient on radiology request form.

Completes appropriate forms correctly:

  • Time Out

  • Pregnancy Statement

  • Medication Reconciliation

  • Imaging worksheet

Fills out worksheets on all patients' exams.

Uses immobilizing devices as required by the patient's age, condition or the procedure as determined by patient assessment.

Using professional judgment:

  • Performs the procedure as ordered with proper and appropriate indications for procedure.

  • Modifies procedure as required through knowledge gained by patient assessment without compromising diagnostic or therapeutic outcome.

  • Actively assist in meeting all department accrediting and licensing standards including:

  • State Health Department.

  • Any other state, local or federal agency as required.

  • Communication:

Ensures that communication supports the plan of patient care.

Communicates clearly with patients of all ages, peers and others in order to complete the hospital/physician plan of patient care.

Notifies the patient's attending physician or Radiologist of any patient issues that affect the plan of patient care as directed as soon as possible.

  • Notifies the nurse at the physician's office if the physician is not available.

  • Procedures:

Provides appropriate patient care during the correct performance of radiologic procedures.

Safely transports wheelchair, stretcher and ambulatory patients as needed.

Documents technical factors on all procedures immediately upon completion of the procedure.

Performs venipuncture under the supervision of a physician on patients of all ages.

Assist the Radiologist within the technologist scope of practice as directed by the physician.

Functions as lead technologist or team leader during the absence of Supervisor.

  • Plans job assignments, relating to needs of the department.

  • Coordinates schedules and supervises technical exams to ensure quality diagnostic standards are maintained.

  • Maintains departmental efficiency and cleanliness.

Demonstrates proper working knowledge of sterile techniques related to a technologist's need to assist Radiologist during invasive procedures.

Knowledge of Teleradiolography.

Coordinates their work schedules as directed by the needs of department.

  • Willing to work late if necessary.

  • Willing to come to work early if needed.

  • Willing to work on weekends and holidays as needed.

  • Willing to take call.

Assists other technologists when they have a problem with a procedure.

Assist student technologists on scanning techniques.

Orders supplies each week.

Reviews complete procedure to assure:

  • All organs are identified as ordered.

  • Procedure charges have been correctly made.

  • Physician's order corresponds with printed order on exam request.

  • Education:

Provides education for students, patients, self and others appropriate for the age that is being served.

Provides clinical supervision for student Radiographers.

Participates in student clinical competency evaluation by completing:

  • Weekly student evaluations.

  • Evaluates student clinical competency by observing student clinical performance and documenting their competence.

Pursues educational self development in order to maintain ARDM certification or ARRT, if also a Technologist of a different modality such as CT Tech or Rad Tech

Maintains education requirements.

Completes mandatory LEARN assignments prior to due date.

Maintains CPR certification according to Health Care Provider course standards by the American Heart Association.

Attends school faculty meetings or monthly department meetings.

  • Environment:

Maintains a safe environment for patients, self and others.

Ensure that all radiation safety standards are met for all age groups.

Documents patient pregnancy statements.

  • Notifies attending physician immediately if patient is pregnant or suspects pregnancy before performing the procedure.

Modifies the procedure for pregnant patients as directed by physician using the Radiology Safety Manual Guidelines to include the use of:

  • Lead shielding.

  • Performing different or fewer images that still support the patient plan of care.

Avoid any mechanical, biological, radiation or electrical hazard and report potential hazards immediately.

  • Minimizes patient radiation exposure by proper performance and avoiding repeat radiographs.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 2 years in general radiology, clinical experience in at least 2 of the following areas; General/Fluoroscopy, MRI, CT or Ultrasound.

Education: Required, graduate of program of Radiologic Technology accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or a graduate of a military program accredited by JRCERT or a graduate of an accredited ultrasound training program. ARRT and State of Arkansas License, ARDMS for Ultrasound. Preferred advanced certification in CT and/or MRI as well as vascular ultrasound.

Experience: Prefer two (2) years of work experience as a Radiologic Technologist. Prefer one (1) year of experience in General /Fluoroscopy, CT, MRI and/or General Ultrasound

Physical Requirements:The physical activities involve balancing, climbing, crawling, grasping, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping and use of fingers and repetitive movements. An individual in this position may be required to carry or lift weight of up to fifty (50) pounds and push/pull one hundred/one hundred-fifty 100-150 pounds. The sensory and communicative activities required for this position include feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling and speaking. Individuals in this position could possibly be exposed to inside environmental conditions, blood borne pathogens and body fluids, chemical hazards, respiratory hazards and radiological hazards.

Skills:Certified in CPR according to Health Care Provider Course standards by the American Heart Association. Able to use complex imaging equipment and computers. Demonstrates good interpersonal skills and readily adapts to changing events in the radiographic environment. Must demonstrate proficiency in the operation of all diagnostic equipment. Works well with/without direct supervision
