Our District:

The Sultan School District is one of the larger geographical school districts in the Puget Sound area, consisting of approximately 325 square miles. Sultan School District has approximately 2,000 students enrolled K-12. Students are currently served by two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and an alternative high school; and the Sno-Isle Skills Center, a cooperative vocational technical school.

Our Community:

Located northeast of Seattle (seven miles east of Monroe) or about 20 minutes from the Woodinville area, Sultan is surrounded by a beautiful environmental setting. Our "backyard" is the scenic Skykomish River and Cascade Mountains. Sultan School District includes the community of Sultan, Startup, and Gold Bar. Students from Index attend Sultan High School.

The ML Teacher, under the direction of the Executive Director for Teaching & Learning, is responsible for providing teaching to non-English and limited-English proficient K-12 students, using English as a Second Language (ESL), and sheltered instruction strategies.

The ML teacher will create a program and class environment favorable to learning and personal growth of students which facilitates ML student success in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in life, and establish good relationships and rapport with students, parents, and staff members. The teacher will document student progress, activities, and outcomes; address specific educational needs of students; and provide feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals. The teacher will maintain professional competence through in-service education, coursework, and professional growth activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: K-12 District-wide (4 Buildings: 2 Elementary, 1 Middle, and 1 High)

  • Complies with Federal and State testing and reporting guidelines.

  • Demonstrates appropriate "best instructional practices" in classrooms where ML students are learning.

  • Coordinates the language assessment and determines identification of incoming limited English proficient students.

  • Monitors and evaluates ML students' progress.

  • Notifies parents of students identified for ML program participation.

  • Organizes and monitors the ML instructional assistant program.

  • Devises and maintains student and staff records and reports necessary to the ML program.

  • Maintains appropriate inventories of materials.

  • Participates in the adoption, development or revision of ML curriculum for all ML students.

  • Involves herself/himself in ongoing classroom visitations, demonstrations and support to promote ML, and sheltered English curriculum and instructional strategies.

  • Acquires, recommends and develops teaching strategies and instructional materials to implement new curricula in the area of transitional second language.

  • Assists with staff development programs in the area of ML programs.

  • Collaborates with classroom teachers on effective ways to increase student achievement for ML.

  • Informs staff members of major trends and developments in the area of ML programs.

  • Works with individuals and committees to continue development of appropriate ML programs.

  • Plans and implements 3-4 district bilingual parent meetings each year.

  • Assists school site bilingual program in the development, implementation and evaluation of school improvement plans, specifically in the ML program.

  • Plan, develop and implement a course of instruction in English designed to achieve District and State Essential Learnings.

  • Demonstrated interest, commitment, and ability to work with students at all levels.

  • Cause successful learning.

  • Promote interest in the study of English.

  • Promote academic confidence in students.

  • Assure that classroom practices align with WA State (WIDA) and district requirements.

  • Prepare lessons that reflect adaptation for individual student differences (differentiation).

  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, board policies, and administrative regulations.

  • Provide various learning approaches for meaningful learning experiences

  • Work collaboratively with other staff to strengthen core academics by implementing the CCSS, WA-EL Standards (WIDA), PBIS and other strategies.

  • Use measurable goals and data driven results for continuous progress toward a competent student body.

  • Maintain positive rapport with students, parents and staff.

  • Cooperate with other members of the staff and participate in the continuous improvement process in accordance with district requirements.

  • Use preparation/planning time to include participating as a team member (grade level, department, building, etc.) in the continuous improvement process.

  • Administer WIDA Screener to incoming EL Students.

  • Administer WIDA Access Assessment to all EL Students

  • Co-plans with teachers and provides scaffolds, learning aids, and strategies to Emerging ML Students in classes.

  • Enters data for ML students in CEDARS.

  • Informs parents of ML students WIDA screener and Access Assessment results.

  • Coordinates ML Para-Professionals in buildings.

  • Provide opportunities for students to take ownership of their learning.

  • Provide students with opportunities to become technologically competent.

  • Provide instruction in English skills necessary to lead to success on district, state and national assessments.

  • Develop assessment tools that evaluate students by the same standards to measure student learning.

  • Teach students to use reflection and goal setting.

  • Support students in the planning and assessment of their learning.

  • Establish classroom standards for students to use appropriate learning behavior.

  • Create a positive, safe and supportive learning environment.

  • Provide cultural awareness and sensitivity opportunities.

  • Train students to use self-management skills.

  • Provide students with opportunities to work in collaboration with others.

  • Connect extended content learning opportunities into life experiences.

  • Partnership with parents and families in student learning,

  • Remain current in subject area(s).

POSITION MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful teaching experience as a bilingual or language development specialist teacher preferred.

  • Evidence of strong classroom management skills.

  • Evidence of strong instructional skills and commitment to excellence in education.

  • Experience/training integrating special needs students in the regular setting.

  • Training/experience integrating technology into the curriculum.

  • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate curriculum.

  • Evidence of leadership, positive human relations and organizational skills.

  • Willingness to direct or assist in extra-curricular activities.

  • Awareness and understanding of the Common Core State Standards & WIDA Standards.

  • Willingness to work as a member of the educational team.

  • Ability to communicate appropriately with students, parents and staff.

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge in an application of research-based best practices.

EDUCATION, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, FORMAL TRAINING:

  • Valid Washington State Teacher Certificate with ESL or Bilingual Education endorsement for position

  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance

  • I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
