Job Description: Los Alamos Medical Center
Schedule for this position is Tuesdays - Fridays. Tuesday- Thursday sched. is 10am-9 pm, and Friday9am-6pm.
Collects and processes blood specimens for testing in thelaboratory. This position also performsclerical and record keeping duties for the department.
Labels,processes and delivers specimens for testing.
Collectsblood specimens using age-appropriate techniques.
Verifies patient andspecimen identification before performing any procedure according to standardprocedure.
Confers with patientsto obtain the information needed for laboratory records, explain the procedure,allay fears and elicit cooperation.
Collects drug screensaccording ot the chain of custody guidelines and procedures.
Distributes samples toappropriate laboratory within expected deadlines immediately after collection.
Processes incomingrequisitions and samples according to specimen processing protocols.
Centrifuges specimensand delivers specimens to correct tetsing area, and stores blood samples forsubsequent testing.
Allocates theappropriate amount of specimen to the appropriate tubes for the different testsand panels.
Verifies samplescollected by non-laboratory personnel are properly collected, labeled andmatched with the appropriate request or barcode labels for appropriate testing.
Enters patientdemographics and order into laboratory computer system.
Investigates and verifiesunusual orders with the units,physicians, and/or reference lab.
Queries, prints,faxes, mails and/or charts any reports to the appropriate person/unit/officethat requires manual reporting.
Performs clericalduties, including answering phones, data entry, and filing.
Completes anddocuments scheduled and unscheduled computer maintenance to include changingribbons and labels, resetting terminals, downing terminal, logging in and outof system and cleaning workstation.
Trains students or newemployees as directed.
Utilizes thelaboratory and hospital QA/PI plans to continually improve processes anddesigns.
Performs a variety ofroutine blood drawing procedures to include venipuncture and finger/heel sticktechniques using the appropriate equipment while following the criteria set forage appropriateness following laboratory collection protocols. Record appropriatecollection information on the collection containers.
Investigate and verifyunusual orders with the units, physicians, and/or reference lab.
Stock supplies andmaintains inventory
Perform pending log and uncollected specimenlist checks throughout shift and utilize for handoff communicationdocumentation. Resolve issues found therein.
Phlebotomy course or prior phlebotomy trainingpreferred. Nationalphlebotomy certification such as ASPT or ASCP preferred.
Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.BLS within 90 days of hire. Requirescritical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work withminimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and takeappropriate action
