TITLE: Newspaper Sponsor

LOCATION: Eisenhower

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.

JOB GOAL: The Newspaper Sponsor is responsible for all aspects of the production of the

middle school newspaper. The sponsor is to train and supervise the student staff and

monitor the activities of the program. The sponsor will work with the school administration, school organizations, classes, and student staff to create a newspaper that is inclusive of the school's student population.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association

  • Exercise proper care and handling of district equipment.

  • Ensures appropriate content and opinions are published.

  • Supervises the growth and development of students to plan, organize, and produce a minimum of eight middle school newspapers annually (maybe a combination of print and online publications).

  • Provides for the safety of students, facilities, and equipment while conducting all newspaper activities.

  • Ensures that all publication deadlines are met so that the newspaper is available for distribution at the scheduled date.

  • Monitors student coverage of events.

  • Coordinates the layout, copy, and contents of the newspaper.

  • Edits and proofreads all articles, announcements and advertisements in the newspaper.

  • Facilitates the training of students in the production of a high-quality newspaper.

  • Maintains the Newspaper page of the website.

  • Provide newsletter articles to the Principal as appropriate.

  • Consults with parents as needed

  • Support and conform to established decisions and policy decisions of a general nature that are in keeping with the established policies and procedures of the school and of USD 500.

  • Inform administration of equipment needs to maintain the safety and performance of students.

  • Conducts and attends a variety of supporting activities such as sports, concerts, and events to provide information regarding the program and/or recognize participants' accomplishments

  • Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Activities Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certified teacher or qualify for Rule 10 certification through the Kansas State High Schoo Activities Association.

  • Succsesful completion of a criminal background check.

  • Current certification in CPR and AED

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION:

Speak clearly and concisely in written and oral form. Maintain communication with all constituents including district staff. Utilize existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Organize work efficiently in order to support the mission and vision of Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from internal and external sources.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and is a standard acceptable level for this environment. Coach is directly responsible for students' safety, work output and well-being. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Varies by Sport

RATE OF PAY: Based on the KCKPS Supplemental Pay Schedule

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

REPORT TO: Athletic Director or Building Administrator

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy.
