Summary:
The Medical Instrument Technician (MRI) shall provide services in accordance with established standards, principals and ethics of the profession at Madigan Army Medical Center (Ft Lewis).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receives and reviews requests from physicians and other health care

providers for MRI examinations of patients.

  • Determines the condition(s) at issue and the procedures and equipment

necessary to best meet the needs of the individual case.

  • Receives and positions patient for examination. Explains procedures and actions to allay fears and secure maximum cooperation. Retrieves lab results and calculates glomerular filtration rate to ensure patients meet criteria for gadolinium based contrast use.

  • Notifies radiologist if further consent must be obtained for patients with reduced renal failure.

  • Conducts research on implants and devices to ensure the safety of patients undergoing MRI procedures.

  • Selects, sets up, adjusts and operates the MRI equipment in either the 3T or 1.5T MRI suites.

  • Conducts examinations, adjusting technique and equipment to best present the medically significant aspects found if unanticipated conditions or anomalies are discovered, extends and modifies procedure to insure full and accurate information as to findings and patient condition.

  • Observes and reports patient responses to instructions, movement, touch, etc., if significant. Monitors patient condition during examination and, if necessary, renders emergency aid and summons assistance. Assists radiologist or physician in reading or evaluating results. Independently performs complex computerized 3D and 2D MRI scanning of the head and/or body.

  • Perform thorough patient screenings, identify contraindications and conduct additional research on MR imaging conditions associated with implanted items to ensure exams are performed with no harm to the patient.

  • Conduct creatinine lab value retrieval utilizing CHCS and perform GFR calculation to ensure patient's kidney function is at an acceptable level per standard operating procedure prior to gadolinium based contrast administration.

  • Consult with radiologist staff in regard to safety concerns (i.e. implants, metallic injuries to the face/neck/limbs/torso and low glomerular filtration rates GFR) in accordance with local standard operating procedure, and provide notification when patient consents are required prior to performing MRI examinations.

  • Perform MRI examinations per radiologist protocol utilizing pre-determined imaging sequences and parameters.

  • Adjust parameters appropriately taking into account Signal to Noise, TR/TE, Averages, and Concatenations when deviating outside of established imaging protocols.

  • Prepare gadolinium contrast media for injection and perform venipuncture utilizing both intravenous catheters and/or vacutainer needle sets.

  • Closely monitor patients during and after gadolinium based contrast injections to ensure there are no complications and any emergent medical attention can be administered in a timely manner.

  • Record patient, exam and any other pertinent information for each imaging study performed. Document contrast type, volume, site accessed, lot number and expiration date in appropriate sections of the patient's imaging packet.

  • Conduct quality control on images produced, perform patient departure procedures in CHCS, scan patient's exam record into Centricity PACS, provide any pertinent details (i.e. patient condition/cooperation limitations, technical factors changes and etc.) utilizing the notes feature to facilitate radiologist readings and understanding of how the exam was acquired if deviations to standard protocol were used.

  • Perform post processing tasks that may include MPRs, MIPS and Subtractions utilizing vendor specific programs and tools.

  • Conduct supply and linen restocks, ensuring appropriate levels are consistently maintained. Remove full dirty linen hampers and reline with provided bags, close out sharps containers that are full and conduct visual surveys of the surrounding work area to ensure cleanliness.

  • Inform modality supervisor of any discrepancies in supplies, equipment, and both patient and staff safety.

  • Perform other duties as assigned within the general scope of those normally performed by a registered magnetic resonance imaging technologist in a hospital setting.

Minimum Qualifications:
(To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)

  • Be a graduate of an accredited radiologic technology program.

  • Be registered as a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technologist through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

  • Have a minimum of one-year in the hospital setting as a registered MRI technologist. Experience should include utilizing Philips and Siemens MRI scanners, MedRad contrast injection systems and Invivo patient monitoring equipment.

  • Must possess and maintain current course completion documentation for basic cardiac life support (BLS) through an American Heart Association approved training program. Additional requirements will be outlined in technical exhibits per specialty.

  • Shall maintain all license and certification requirements and meet all continuing education requirements of the U.S. jurisdiction in which they are licensed to practice.

  • Shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with all parties and other health care providers. In addition, if the position requires the use of computers, the contract HCPs shall be computer literate.

  • Shall have the required education, training, experience and documented current competence in the required specialty position description.

  • Shall possess sufficient initiative, interpersonal relationship skills and social sensitivity such that he/she can relate constructively to a variety of patients from diverse backgrounds.
