Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Drives, maintains and cares for all types of vehicles such as passenger cars, patient transport vehicles, wheelchair vans, and trucks up to and including one and a half tons.
Transports patients, employees, lab specimens, and materials safely between various destinations.
Ensures that all required accident forms, bridge tickets, and manuals are maintained in the vehicle.
Completes vehicle daily maintenance checks, including fuel, oil, water, automatic transmissions, instruments, horn, brakes, and any leaks,.
Reads and interprets road maps to determine the shortest and quickest route to and from destination.
Properly loads and unloads vehicles so as to not injure patients or damage cargo.
Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work requires long periods of driving, lifting and normal dexterity. Moderate to heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of patients. Incumbent must be able to help non-ambulatory patients from vehicles, wheelchairs or gurneys. Such lifting may require considerable physical exertion, since some patients are debilitated or paralyzed. Patients must be moved correctly while using proper body mechanics to prevent injury.
The incumbent is required to work outside and is occasionally exposed to inclement weather conditions while loading and unloading vehicles. Drives in all types of traffic, weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. The operator is subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading or unloading vehicles.
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
