Motor Equipment Operator I

The City of Virginia Beach is hiring a Motor Equipment Operator I with our Public Works Stormwater division.

This position requires a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver's license eligibility requirements and a Commercial Driver's License

• Class B (VA or NC).

Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus.

Duties include:

• Operate a dump truck in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel, and supplies.

• Operate a light truck in carrying tools, equipment, and supplies, to and from job site.

• Operate a motor truck engaged in snow removal or sanding of icy streets and roads.

• Operate dump truck and/or backhoe in making ditch repairs.

• Operate a Ditch Master.

• Service and perform minor repairs on automotive equipment include, but not limited to, excavator, frontend loader, and backhoe.

• Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck.

• Position also requires a significant amount of work by hand when cleaning drainage structures, pipes, ditches, removing debris, downing trees, and shoveling sediment.

• Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less.

• Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

• Pre-employment physical is required.

• Must possess a Commercial Driver's License

• Class B (VA or NC)

Please Note: This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies

• CDL Hiring Bonus

• The $4,000 CDL (Class A or B) Hiring Bonus is for newly hired employees only. The bonus will be paid in three increments during the first year of employment.

• $1,000 with first paycheck
• $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
• $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
